Jesse James was known as an American outlaw and legendary figure. Jesse and his family were in favor of the south, which caused he and his brother to join a guerreila band. Jesse and his brother were the most feared outlaws of the late 1800's. They were said to have robbed multiple banks and trains and to have killed countless individuals. It was said that Jesse was like Robin Hood; supposedly he took from the rich to give to the poor. Jesse was killed by a friend who became a traitor for the greed of money. Jesse James gained fame through his criminal ways and remains as an American icon even today.
Jesse Woodsen James was born on September 5, 1847 to Robert Sallee James and Zerelda Elizabeth Cole James. He was born in Kearney, Missouri, but back in his time it was known as Clay County. Jesse had one brother named Franklin "Frank" James and a sister named Susan Lavenia James. He also had another brother, but he died thirty-three days after he was born. His parents were married on December 28, 1841. His father continued his schooling and graduated from Georgetown College. When his father graduated, he moved his family to the Centerville area of Clay County. Robert, Jesse's dad, became a pastor, he was a well-liked and well-respected man. Robert was also a founder of William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri. Zee, Jesse's mother, was a hard-working woman who was very strong willed. James's father served as a chaplain on a wagon train headed to California in search of gold. He left the farm on April 12, 1850. While in California, he contracted a disease and died. On July 25, 1946, two young black couples- Roger and Dorothy Malcom, George and Mae Murray Dorsey-were killed by a lynch mob at the Moore's Ford Bridge over the Appalachee River connecting Walton and Oconee Counties (Brooks, 1). The four victims were tied up and shot hundreds of times in broad daylight by a mob of unmasked men; murder weapons included rifles, shotguns, pistols, and a machine gun. "Shooting a black person was like shooting a deer," George Dorsey's nephew, George Washington Dorsey said (Suggs C1). It has been over fifty years and this case is still unsolved by police investigators. It is known that there were atleast a dozen men involved in these killings. Included in the four that were known by name was Loy Harrison. Loy Harrison may not have been an obvious suspect to the investigators, but Harrison was the sole perpetrator in the unsolved Moore's Ford Lynching case. The motive appeared to be hatred and the crime hurt the image of the state leaving the town in an outrage due to the injustice that left the victims in unmarked graves (Jordon,31).

His parents struggled to get everyone in his family fed since their family consisted of twelve people (“Jesse Owens”). Many of his siblings were too busy to help their parents because of school. Jesse Owens was still too young for school which led to Owens having to help his parents out by earning money and buying food. What topped it all off was he was an African-American and in that time period, African-Americans were greatly judged. Owens was forced to become a man at a very young age and made him mature very fast.

James Warren “Jim” Jones was born on May 13, 1931 in Lynn, Indiana. Jim Jones grew up in a very racially segregated area of Indiana and in a broken home. Jones’s father was a poor influence from an early age. His father was an injured WWI veteran, a drunk and alleged member of the Ku Klux Klan which left the burden of caring for the family to his mother. His mother provided for the family by working in a factory to put food on the table. Jones was a very strange child, in interviews from the documentary Jonestown: The life and Death of the Peoples Temple (Nelson 2007), child hood friends claimed he was obsessed with death. One person said that he was even caught multiple times holding funerals for small animals that had died.
