Jeremiah 31:1-6 is the announcement of restoration, giving rest to Israel. Through the Old Testament we begin to understand and learn that Exodus is a book written by Moses a descendent of Abraham. Exodus paints the reader a picture and describes a chain of successions and Gods requests and responses from his people. Approximately, four hundred years had passed since Joseph made the profound decision to pick up his life and move his family to Egypt. Every one of Abraham’s descendants had matured and grown immensely becoming essentially over two million strong. In Egypt there was a new pharaoh ruling, one in which believed the Hebrews to be foreigners with numbers tremendously frightening. The pharaoh decided to take all of the Hebrew people and force them into slavery, hence they wouldn’t upset his balance of power.
In this movie, one may observe the different attitudes that Americans had towards Indians. The Indians were those unconquered people to the west and the almighty brave, Mountain Man went there, “forgetting all the troubles he knew,” and away from civilization. The mountain man is going in search of adventure but as this “adventure” starts he finds that his survival skills are not helping him since he cant even fish and as he is seen by an Indian, who watches him at his attempt to fish, he start respecting them. There have been many passages in the bible that are appealing to different people. What one person may find inspiring, another may view it as just another message in the bible. One of the passages in the bible that I found inspiring was that of one of the prophets, Jeremiah. The one particular passage that I would like to focus on in this paper would be that of Jeremiah's views on the subject of sin. I found that his thought on this subject made me look at how people act in a different way than I had before.
Exodus is concerned with the relationship aspect of the Patriarchal promises. Sometimes this relationship is expressed in various ways such as a blessing or guidance. By saying "I am the God of your father — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob", He showed that he is faithful. He is faithful to His promises, such as God promised to give the Jews the land. When Moses turns to God's promises, he is in essence saying, “God we are not worthy of your blessings, we are here because of you, and we depend on you.” God acted as a parent towards a child. He wanted the best for His children. He, out of love for his children responded to them in different ways. At times he was tough, at other times gentle. Sometimes he enforced the rules and other times he would bend them depending on the occasion. Sometimes he denied his children of certain things and other times he gave openhandedly. He wants to love us and take care of us. Moses learned from God’s parenting skills. God taught lessons to his people as a parent would do. He also rescued his children when they were in trouble by defeating the powerful Egyptians and brought us out so that we could be his people.
The Exodus is the familiar story of the nation of Israel. Gods chosen people being taken out of slavery, after a series of plagues against Egypt and into the wilderness in search of the promise land. (Ex. 7-14) Throughout the Exodus, God reveals his character in two main themes, one through the constant redemption of his people (Ex. 14-30) and his power and superiority. The word Exodus means “departure” or “outgoing” and God continually provides a way of escape for his people throughout the Exodus ( Ex. 12 & 14) and throughout the entire bible into the New Testament (1 Cor. 10:1-13)
God’s people found themselves in captivity in Egypt after the death of Joseph and the Pharaoh that had knowledge of the good done by children of Israel (Ex. 1:8-14). God saw the oppression of His people and sent Moses and Aaron to deliver His people from slavery (Ex. 3:10, 4:14-16).
The Mosaic Covenant from exodus is a promise made between God and the nation of Israel at Mount Sinai. To begin with, the pattern of the covenant is very similar to other ancient covenants of that time because it is between God and his people. The redemption that mostly played out in the New Testament in a part of the New Covenant found in Jeremiah 31:33, “‘or this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” This covenant is also known as the permanent covenant, because God promised to write it on our hearts, and because God laid out His plans for the coming of Christ. The coming of Jesus was prophesied early in the Bible, and according to Williams Rainey Harper in his journal, Micah 5 told of the coming of Christ. The Resurrection of Jesus and the Hope of Immortality states, “…significance for believers or for all men is considered to depend logically upon the similarity of Jesus to other men and is weakened in the degree in which he is considered unique as the Son of God, the second person in the Trinity.” While it is sometimes hard to understand, God fulfilled the New Covenant. Jesus died on a cross, so we are forgiven our sins. His blood was the price of our sins. The most well known Bible verse John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” His death promised us an eternal
Following the creation story of the book of Genesis is the book of Exodus. In Genesis, God promised Abraham a “great nation from which all nations of the earth will be blessed (Gen 12:1-3)” and in Exodus God completes this promise through the creation of the holy nation, Israel. Exodus tells the story of the God who rescued his people out of Egypt because of the promise he had made to Abraham. God calls to Moses to complete his promise. God’s call to Moses is not only important because he liberates the Israelites but also because God reveals His name(s) along with His true Nature. God calls upon Moses and tells him that He’s back to help the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and that Moses is to lead them. God then gives him full instructions on what to tell the Pharaoh and, more importantly, the Israelites, who are promised, land “flowing with milk and honey”.
Thousand of years ago, Moses lead enslaved Hebrews out of Egypt and to the promised land. This was the Exodus. If I were an Israelite slave I would have followed Moses. There are several reasons why I would make my decision. Due to the fact that, Moses proved that he would take to God, this would make me follow him. Also, Moses had more power than Pharaoh. Moses proved that he was trustworthy, so I would join him in the Exodus.
In the Biblical Book of Exodus, Moses was not originally supposed to be born under the Pharaoh’s rule because he was an Israelite male. Pharaoh decreed all Hebrew boys born were to be killed in the Nile River. Moses survived because Pharaoh’s servants feared God more. This law was one of Pharaoh’s ways to oppress the Hebrew people. It was a tactic to keep the majority of the population from growing as well as implementing slavery. However, that did not stop the Israelites from multiplying in size: “’And now indeed the cry of the Israelites has come to me, and I have also seen how severely the Egyptians oppress them. So now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt’” (New English Translation, Exodus 3:9-10). The book of Jeremiah is made up of Prophetic Oracles and Narrative History. However, the book of Jeremiah is not in chronological order. The main purpose of this book was a warning. The warning of destruction that was coming and to try and bring Judah back to the Lord. Jeremiah not only gives warnings but he also prophecies about the Messiah and the New Covenant that was to come. One of the great themes of Jeremiah is judgement. The book begins with an account of Jeremiah's call to be a prophet. The passages are written from the view of Jeremiah's when he is older and when it seemed clear to him that even before Jeremiah was born, the Lord had a plan and purpose for him to fulfill. Jeremiah's earliest prophecies, like those of Zephaniah, are believed to be connected with the threat of Judah being invaded by the Scythians. He felt that his home land would be completely destroyed as punishment for the sins that the Lords people committed. His predictions in this was not fulfilled but was taken by the people as evidence that he was a false prophet. One of the important events that took place a few years after Jeremiah began his prophetic work was the discovery of the law book in the Temple at Jerusalem. This book, was the main part of what we now call the Book of Deuteronomy. It was declared to be the word of God, and king Josiah made it a part of the law of the land. For a time, Jeremiah was pleased with king Josiah's decision. The laws were intended not only to correct many of the peoples sins that they committed in the land but also to protect the worship of the Lord from destruction by the evil influences of idolatry worship. The beginning of the book is describing in first person from Jeremiah the prophet the destruction of Jerusalem and how sad it is of a site to see. In chapter two of the book Jeremiah is talking about the how mad the lord is at his people, and how he brought judgement to the wicked land. One would emphasize the glorious future of the Kingdom of Israel, and the other would speak to the coming work of the Messiah, portraying him not as a reigning king but as a suffering servant who would be slain on behalf of his people.
