Throughout the tragedy Hamlet, revenge and jealousy are common motives that consume the majority of the people in Denmark. With these underlying character attributes, and with Hamlet’s secret meeting with the ghost, it is clear to see why Marcellus believes Denmark is in chaos with his famous quote, “ Something is rotten in the state of Denmark,” (1.4.100). Marcellus is aware that an apparition rarely means good news, and that King Hamlet’s death was very suspicious. The main source of Denmark’s destruction is caused by Claudius and his jealousy over his brother being king, pushing Hamlet to pursue a life of grief and anger, which led him to take immoral actions against others that are not necessary. He knows that something is very suspicious in his father's death, even though he still isn't sure what it is. Also, he is very angry at his mother for abandoning his father and moving on with Claudius so quickly. He plans to make both of them feel guilty for their actions by making incestial comments about their relationship, and by mentioning his father’s death whenever possible. However, once Hamlet speaks with the ghost, his revenge immediately intensifies and is targeted more at Claudius than anyone else. He wants to fulfill his promise to his father and avenge his murder by secretly killing Claudius while he is sinning in order to ensure his arrival in hell. Contrary to what the ghost tells Hamlet, he still wishes to make the queen feel bad and he does so by calling her a harlot and using cruel words. Also, Hamlet is determined to seek revenge on those who go against him such as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He knows they aren't truly his friends anymore and are secretly working for Claudius. Due to this, he feels no remorse for sending them to their deaths in England by changing Claudius’ orders to the King of England.
