Dictionary- reference defines courage as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery” In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee expresses courage in many ways through the novel. In the novel, nearly every character display courage in their life. Courage is the inner desire to succeed and to do what is right, no matter what consequences of your decision. Throughout the novel, Atticus define courage as "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” One of the central topics of the novel is that a man of courage is a man who doesn’t run away but fight against his enemy even though they know they going to lose.
What I liked about the book was the ways it showed how humans really act. How when civilization leaves and fear takes over we are left as savages. Basically in all humans, evil exists, and we eventually have to release it. It illustrations how, if put the ideal situation, the evil inside man can surface from where it is contained and come to light in the most alarming and upsetting ways. There were many conflicts in the novel; civilization vs. savagery, order vs. chaos, good vs. evil, and reason vs. impulse. They all illustrated humanity and the inner conflicts we may go through each day, yet not as big and heightened as the boys went through in the book. Made me wonder how this book could be applied to today’s society.
...ome aspect of war, from battling with enemies to how battle spiritually destroys young men. The one positive point of this novel is how friends cared for one another when going through tragedies and stressful experiences. It also portrays how strong a soldier needs to be, in order for them to be in the war.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is a novel by Harper Lee, that teaches many themes, one of which being very important is courage. Many people think that courage is a man with a gun in his hand, but Lee’s definition is much different. She thinks that courage is when you know that you’re beaten before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. The first quote I have to further explain this is early in the story when Atticus tells Jem and Scout about the court case he is handling. “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 101). Atticus knows he won’t win the court case, but he still tries his best and doesn’t falter whatsoever. Many people scrutinize him for defending a negro, but he ignores them like he should, and shows maturity and courage.
Courage is the thing which can be found in a child to an old man. It needs a lot of courage to take out courage from the heart. It is like a brain. It depends on the person, how and when he uses it. This tiny word has the power to convey the whole gesture of a person. According to Harper Lee?s genius ?To Kill a Mockingbird?, Courage is when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through it through no matter what.
Courage is an attribute that someone has when they stand up for what they believe in. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie shows some acts of courage. Cassie faces some challenges and she handles them in different ways. Cassie shows courage by standing up for Little Man, volunteering to be splashed by the bus for revenge, and standing up to Lillian Jean. I think that she did the right thing when she stood up for Little Man. She was trying to make things right.
As the famous radio show host Dennis Prager once said ¨Goodness is about character - integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, and moral courage, and the like. Mark Twain once said, “Courage is not the absence of fear; it is acting in spite of it.” Courage is the ability to stand up and do something that is frightening, and having strength in the face of grief or pain. Rosa Parks, John Basilone, and Mare Barrow, the main character from Victoria Aveyard’s series, The Red Queen, showed great courage and taught me several things.

Courage is as stated in The New International Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language to be “the capacity to meet danger or difficulty with firmness.” In my mind courage has always meant doing what you had to do, and dealing with it because you had to. I never had a choice in my life whether I wanted to move to a different city or not. I just would get told one day that I had about a month before I had to pack up all of my things, say goodbye to all of my friends, say goodbye to my school, and leave everything I had know for the last year or so and move to a whole different place that I didn’t know. For a young child this can be hard. I learned early on, that I was suppost to “stay strong,” as my father always said. He would tell me that I had to be courageous, and a trooper through all of this and that it would be a new adventure.
The definition of courage is the ability to do what frightens one, this means that a person would do what other people fear. In anne frank an example would be when mr.frank went downstairs to see what the noises coming from downstairs were despite the others being frightened when his a burglar broke in and stole property from the business. This is found courageous because while the remainder of the Frank's and the van daan’s were freaking out mr.frank went to make sure everyone was alright. Instead of choosing to be courageous mr.frank could have hid and let the rest of the families deal with the issue themselves. Compassion was also shown to
There are a multitude of ways in which courage can be defined. For instance, Atticus Finch, a fearless lawyer who stands up for a wrongfully accused African-American man, describes courage as “knowing you’re licked before you begin, but begin[ning] anyway and see[ing] [the task] through, no matter what”. Courage, however, can also be defined as acting on one’s beliefs despite facing potential danger, or as making an effort to do something that seems to be frightening. The common factor in all of these definitions, though, is risk. A universal definition of courage, therefore, is the ability to take risks in the face of adversity. In Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, the most courageous, fearless and lionhearted characters, specifically Hassan
