Celebrity Stylist Jason Bolden on His Rise to Success
Celebrity stylist Jason Bolden is making noise in the fashion industry. His client list is continuing to grow by the minute and includes a variety of artists and entertainers that are making an impact in today’s society and culture. Bolden’s celebrity clients include Empire’s Taraji P. Henson, Grown-ish’s Yara Shahidi and Wrinkle in Time director Ava Duvernay
The stylist wanted to work in the fashion industry ever since he was a kid. He studied pre-med at Northwestern Institute but his interest in the arts and fashion drew him to transfer to the Art Institute. Bolden began his career in luxury retail and worked with Cynthia Rowley then moved to Louis Vuitton and then Gucci. He was able to grow a list of non-celebrity wealthy clientele.

Brands such as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein sourced out their design inspiration in Soho which helped Bolden develop his contacts. Bolden was able to cultivate a close relationship with actress Gabrielle Union who worked with him on his first celebrity styling gig in 2011.
After that, opportunities started coming in. In addition on his client list are Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, Storm Reid of Wrinkle in Time and actress Sasha Lane. Bolden is more than just a stylist, he is also a visionary for creating fashion moments in addition to the aesthetics. He also aligns his ideas to help propel his client’s career. Bolden also works as a commentator for E! during red carpet events and is also a partner at a JSN Studio, a design firm along with his hubby interior designer Adair Curtis.

Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. He enjoys, what he calls the “Aha Moment” where the actor can see themselves, and understands their body language when they see their selves transform into their character. If the character is from a time period of the past, he goes as far as putting them in vintage panties or giving them a pocketbook with a handkerchief or a lipstick from that era. He wants his characters to feel as if they are from that time period as well. As far as being a designer he feels that there are certain guidelines he has to do for his work to come to life. Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani was born in Italy in 1932 where he lived for 17 years until he left for Paris to study fashion at the famous school of L’ecole de la Chambre Syndicate de La Couture Parisenne. Valentino’s first career within the industry was with couture atelier Jean dresses where he sketched any chance he got which showed his elaborate aesthetic. He meets extraordinary people during his time there and also designed one of his first solo creations. After five years at Jean dresses he leaves. Valentino has a brief job with friend Guy Laroche, in his small fashion house before moving back to Rome in 1959 to continue his fashion career independently with the backing of his parents. Valentino established his status amongst the elite of the Dolce Vita. In 1960 he met Giancarlo Giammetti in a coffee shop and one of the most significant partnerships in fashion was formed. One of the most successful clothing brands in the world, Polo Ralph Lauren has built its success around more than just its line of luxurious designer clothes, but the company is one of the top marketing designers also. It was awarded “ Luxury Brand of the Year” in 2010 by the Luxury Daily. A company that was founded by a man named Ralph Lifchitz, better known as Ralph Lauren of the Bronx, New York in 1968. Since the age of 12, Lauren’s had a strong appeal and taste for looking classy. He would spend the money he earned working with his father after school, purchasing expensive suites. In his latter years, while working for a company called A. Rivetz & Co., Lauren began designing wide ties, the beginning of what latter evolved into the giant clothing empire known as Polo Ralph Lauren. The success of his designer ties caught fire quickly, retail giant Bloomingdales was the first company to endorse Ralph Lauren’s ties, but that ended quickly, when Lauren refused to narrow his ties, and stuck to his product line. Lauren’s success in the designer clothes business was unusual for someone who studied business at City College. In 1968, he founded the company Polo Fashions, a company that would later expand its market, and is among one of the top designer brands in the world today.

For several years now, Dave has been providing fashion consultation, as he himself is a style icon for many. While talking to Dave, one can make out that he is extremely experienced, and has a great deal of knowledge, when it comes to fashion. “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”
After being ranked 8th in the world and having a known name in the sporting industry, he was easily contacted and hired for designing sports/surfing magazines and advertisements. In the interview conducted by Designboom, Carson stated that he had no real formal training in the design world, resulting in a lack of knowledge in basic design content (i.e. grids, formulas, schools of thought, etc.) (Designboom, 2014). But, with his early interest and education in sociology, and his Bachelor of Arts degree, he is easily able to work with real stories, real people, events, and music. When Carson is given the brief article that he must design around, or the client’s idea pitch, he just designs what he feels is right (Designboom, 2014). The more pieces he creates, the more experimental he gets. This act of fearlessness and adventuresome is what makes him such a desirable designer. Clients are confident that he will produce something unique, beautiful, and daring. Carson stated that his strongest skill is his “ability to speak visually and emotionally to a wide variety of audiences and topics” (Designboom, 2014). Carson has been in the design industry for many years and has worked with many varied clients, making his knowledge and level of creativity mastered. They specifically choose each model who walks in their shows. Sadly, many have said that a model 's race and skin color are usually a major factor in deciding if she books the show or not. The Guardian quotes Annie Walshaw, a model booker, on the subject: "When the client sends you a brief you know straight away they 're not talking about a black girl. They say they want 'a girl with long hair, who looks like a fairy ' or something. When they want a black girl, they will say 'looking for mixedrace girl, tribalprints location, desert scene". So according to Annie, some designers have a "look" in mind, which they believe models with darker skin don 't fit. This "reason" for not using models of color exposes stereotypes created by the fashion industry: White models are seen as delicate, blank canvases, while darker models are "edgy" or "exotic." However, as we all know, these stereotypes aren 't true. In the same article, Carole White, founder of Premier Model Management, describes another reason some designers shy away from selecting ethnically diverse models, saying, "There 's not so much work for them, and sometimes photographers and makeup artists are scared. They don 't know how to light or make them up properly so it takes a lot longer. It 's a slower process."
