Rivers start in mountains, then they trickle methodically down its side as a creek, and when many of these meet a river is formed. These rivers then fill up the ocean, which then evaporates and turns into rain which starts the process over. This is the water cycle. But the water cycle is very similar to human life. One starts as an ignorant, uneducated being, but then through much hardship and austerity we gain knowledge as a river. Finally we pass this knowledge on to our offspring, and the cycle begins anew. This is the life cycle which is beautifully illustrated in Herman Hess’s Siddhartha, where revelation awaits in the flow of time.

The first symbol is the creek because it’s a symbol of danger. The author states on page 47 “You’re sick,” I said. “You have a fever.”(O’Brien). John because he went swimming in the creek and took a bath in it Later through the book faro the dog gets sick and dies because of the creek that they both had swam in. The creek was a big part of the story because about half of the story is Ann trying to help him get better and back on his feet. It was a major impact on Ann because the only things she had left to help her was in jeopardy and after faro she only had John.
In this paper I will discuss the print called Plum Garden at Kameido. This print was created by Ando Hiroshige in 1857. It is a woodblock print. In the front of the print is a close up of a tree. It is an image of a plum tree in a plum garden. The tree has pretty white blooms on it. For this reason it is logical to assume that it must be springtime. Working back, I see two more plum trees. None of the trees have much detail of the bark texture. I can see that if these trees are true to life, Plum trees are not very shapely trees. Behind the second row of trees is what appears to be an iron fence with people standing at various points along the fence. The fence line angles back to show a third row of trees in the distance. Green grass can be seen in much of the fenced in area highlighting the fact that it is a garden.

Symbols have been used often in the history of our planet. Cultures such as Egyptians used literal symbols in their writing to represent objects such as animals and water. However, symbols don’t always mean a written figure. Often the word symbol means a metaphorical representation of something using something completely unrelated in literature or in speech. In fact, almost any work that has lasted all these years contains major symbolism in some way or another. William Butler Yeats, a great writer of the early twentieth century, wrote many incredibly symbolic and meaningful literate works.
