What drives success? Where does it come from? Can you be born into it? These are some common questions when it comes to success. Every one can has their own opinion about what success is, and also what it takes to become successful people in today’s world. That is where Malcolm Gladwell comes into play. After reading “Outliers: The Story of Success”, Gladwell has helped me view the journey to success in ways I have and haven’t heard of before. He helps you understand some complex ideas of why someone may be more successful that someone else. To me success is determined by a lot of things and there is no one thing that can make your success, you have to have multiple things that are not found in one place.
My philosophy of success, is me growing into the person I want to become and being comfortable with the choices I decide to make in life. Success is not something I can achieve overnight, it’s something I must plan for then proceed to working hard for it as well. Without hard work, there isn’t anything successful about the job I want to get done or the job I wish to get done. Doing anything without hard work and dedication, and expecting the best outcome is not success; it’s mediocrity. Being mediocre/ will only allow me or anyone else to have a ‘Victim’s Mindset.’
If a person were to perceive success, the individual might think of the financial prosperity, good grades on a math test, or a happy, healthy family. These are all simple yet achievable tasks in which can be seen as success. In a study conducted by Strayer University, one out of every five
In Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell it talks about “success” and how some people have the opportunity to be successful. The way I would define success is to reach the goals you strive for in life, the way you reach your goals is if you are willing to try to succeed. I personally think that if you want to be successful you first need to figure out what the most important thing to you is. The first most important people in my life are my family, secondly going to college and becoming a nurse is what I need to accomplish to be successful. I can count on my family, has always been there to support my success, I am glad that I have such an amazing family that support me every step of the way.
The definition of success is often linked to cultural expectations. The “American Dream” is closely associated with success. The house with the picket fence, the cars, the summer vacations are all possible with success. “Success is probably the highest value in American life. It relates to so many other characteristics of American life--individualism, freedom, goal-setting, progress, experimenting, social mobility, pragmatism, and optimism. Americans want to ‘make a success’ of themselves” (Nussbaum, 2005). This is something that has been instilled into us as American citizens since we were small. We spend our lives trying to achieve this goal.
What really makes a person successful? It could be merely having good luck and being born with a God given skill or come from hard work and expanding one’s knowledge in order to receive a successful job. In some cases people can be born successful through a famous family or God given athletic skill, but in most cases success comes from hard work. Success is largely the result of hard work with a small part of success being taking advantage of when the “good luck” opportunities that arrive.
Everyone has dreams and goals that they hope to accomplish someday. We all have someone we look up to and hope to be like someday. Someone of us become like that person while others continue to simply dream to be like that person. So why are some people successful, while others aren’t? People aren’t chosen to be or not to be successful at birth, they work to get there. Everyone’s definition of success is different. For some that it is money, while for others it be could health and stability. I think it is very important to take the time and to think about what success means to us. Success for me is to accomplish my personal and academic goals, and live a life full of laughs and hugs. I know that accomplishing my goals will not be easy, but
Winston Churchill once proclaimed that, "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm." Accomplishing a long-term goal, checking of an item of an overflowing bucket list, or winning a competition can all be a great achievement, but not necessarily success. The achievement can only be classified as an example of success when no enthusiasm is lost during the completion of the task. Thomas Edison's failures and Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack are great examples where enthusiasm is not lost, which leads to success being found.
Success only happens if one works hard and stays on task. My definition of success is someone who overcomes hardships. First, success can be many different definitions. However, my definition is someone who overcomes a hardship and earns success from it eventually. One can be as strong as hulk when they overcome that heart wrenching hardship, and another can be as powerful as the sun when they get success from overcoming something very harsh and tough. In addition, when one fights depression, anxiety, or just a tough time to go through, they all prove to be a success in my book. Second, Tyler Joseph, a front man and instrumentalist for my favorite band, not only overcame his fears, depression, and anxiety, but taught me many knowledgeable
We all chase for ‘success’ in our lives. Especially in today’s materialism society, we all live extremely pressing life to be ‘successful’. However there are not much people who actually understands the true meaning of success. People just fits their whole life into busy daily routine without considering specific aims or goals. Furthermore, the key for ‘success’ is obviously confined in a certain frame in modern society. Our understanding of success focuses too much on intelligence and ambition, but we need a novel point of view in order to achieve real success. (It’s time for us to deeply think about the real meaning of success and the way to achieve it.)
