The year was 1607, on May 14 a ship have arrive to what is now known as Jamestown. This was the beginning of the United States, yet it doesn’t tell about the hardship these individuals had to endure. These settlers went through obstacles and came out victorious, but at what price. Death, one of the most common word you will see in Jamestown, this was due to the harsh environment that the settlers have encounter. Many factors have influence their survival from the area that have chosen to the kind of health they are experiencing. The new settlers coming to the new world expects a simple quest of riches, however the odds are against them with the area they have chosen. Of all the land in the “New World”, why did the colonists choose that spot? It was said that it provide strategic war plans against the Spanish. That leaves a potential open attack for the Natives, the colonists were busy preparing for the Spanish that they didn’t put much thought into the enemies in their backyard. The colonists have set their end by choosing that peninsula as the first settlement, around that little portion of land lies 13,000 Native tribes in that target area. (Movie). Their strategic planning have already fail at protecting the colonists, just days after their landing 2 have die to an Indian attack. (Doc. E). Diseases, something that cannot be seen wiped out majority of the colonists. The brackish water was one that caused many death, with the heat high in the summer, the colonists were force to drink brackish water or perish. Many became sick and experience a slow death of dehydration. (Movie). Death was a common word seen in Jamestown, just as Smith had reported, there are “many dead, [and] some sick”. (Doc. E). Many have died, “kills some 110 colonists form famine and disease…” (Doc. E). More and more die, this is what I see from this, from 100s imported in, to 100s being buried in graves.
