As Jerome Bettis walks toward the center of the field on Thanksgiving Day of 1998, he has no idea what is about to happen. This event will be the subject of controversy for days to follow. Bettis and his Pittsburgh Steelers have just finished regulation play against the Detroit Lions and are ready for the coin toss, which will precede the overtime period. Referee Phil Luckett tosses the coin up in the air as Bettis calls "Tails." The coin lands with tails up. The referee then tells the Lions' captains that they have won the toss and asks them what they elect to do. In total amazement, Bettis insists that he said, "Tails," and his Steelers won the toss! But Referee Phil Luckett disagrees with Bettis and allows the Lions to start out overtime with the ball. Detroit goes on to win the controversial overtime period. If instant replay had been implemented at this time, it would have shown that Bettis did indeed call "Tails," which would most likely have changed the outcome of the game. Instant replay should be permanently implemented into the National Football League (NFL).
“Harrison Bergeron” is a story about Big Government forcing equality on citizens by the use of handicaps; in doing so they hold everyone back from their fullest potential. The year 2081 is oppressive to say the least; people are punished for being above average in intelligence, beauty, physical abilities or any variety of capabilities. No one is supposed to be more attractive, stronger, more intelligent or quicker than anyone else. The quest for egalitarianism is faulty; people who are born gifted are hindered by ridiculous weight bags, glasses to cause blindness and headaches, ear radios that send nerve racking noises every twenty seconds courtesy of a government transmitter and hideous masks are a few objects implemented to make everyone equal. The government, in trying to even the playing field to give everyone the same, fair chance, handicapped the gifted far beyond the point of making them equal to the average citizen. In the story “Harrson Burgeron,” Hazel is developed primarily through her average intelligence, limited imagination, and empathy toward her husband as well as others to suggest the central idea that a totalitarianism government leads to the degradation of one’s humanity.
Jonathan Edwards was a man who could petrify any eighteenth century Puritan. He was born in East Windsor, Connecticut and was raised in a household with strict religious beliefs. In 1727 he began his preaching career as an assistant to his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, the pastor at the church at Northampton, Massachusetts. When his grandfather died two years later, Edwards became the pastor of the Church at Northampton and began preaching all over New England. He then emerged as one of the leaders of the Great Awakening with his determination to return to the orthodoxy of the Puritan faith. That is when he adopted his “fire and brimstone” emotional style of sermon. Although people often ran out of the church in hysterics, most stayed in the church captivated by his speeches. He had always purposely chose to address his congregation with a sermon, using all of the elements of an oratory. In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards displays all elements of an oratory by appealing to emotions, including expressive and rhythmic language, addressing the needs and concerns of his audience, and inspiring others to take action.
Harrison Bergeron, projected on a stage representing the conformity of a society with a system of Government based on equality for the weak, which are monitored and controlled by a dictatorial Government.
Part of the movie focuses on the culture and lifestyle of the Polynesian community within Salt Lake City, Utah. That also means shedding light on the gang-violence and drug abuse that exists in some of the low-income Polynesian communities. Gangs like the Regulators, threaten to derail the four players followed in the film. “This particular gang has had a great impact on the Bloomfield brothers, because their family is famous for holding ties with them” (Berkshire, Film Review: ‘In Football We Trust’). They face the pressure of becoming pulled into the violence and drugs as a means to survive and generate income for their families in lieu of an NFL contract. The importance of this ever-present struggle within the players drives home the importance of performing on the field in order for them to rise above their
Even though football players are aware of the dangers the game can bring upon them, they take part despite it. The passion, the joy it creates; for professionals it’s also the devoted fans and compensation they receive is what keeps the players motivated. Today players are much bigger, faster, smarter, bigger, better. The game is more physical. The sport has never been so competitive. The popularity has reached new peaks, as much that the NFL has thoughts of moving a team to London, England. Additionally, Super Bowl XLVII (47) was one of the most watched television events of all time; an astonishing 108.4 million viewers (The Associated Press). Fans worship their teams and love to see big hits. Football is a contact sport; injuries are no doubtingly part of it. Jimmy “Dodge” Connelly is the captain of the Bulldogs and like the rest of his team has no other skills except football. Dodge hears over the radio that 40,000 fans showed up at a Princeton game to see Carter Rutherford play, so he tries to recruit Carter to play for the Bulldogs to bring some of the fans to watch the Bulldogs play. Dodge’s plan works out, there are so many fans trying to
We may be behind on the scoreboard at the end of the game but if you play like that, we cannot be defeated.” He used pathos to hit the player’s soul by explaining himself, explaining that he doesn’t want the team to be the champion by winning, he wanted the team to be the champion by showing their hard work and their passion on the field. And also the coach is using logos by bringing up the six Sons of Marshall, the six players, the six teammates who went away by a plane

“The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal” (Vonnegut). Throughout the world of “Harrison Bergeron” by Vonnegut, everyone is equal. Everything is controlled by the state or the “United States Handicapper General” (Vonnegut). The people of the world are not allowed to have any personality that makes them different from the next person in their controlled society. Vonnegut’s use of diction is noteworthy due to the fact that everyone is supposed to finally be equal. There is not one soul in the entire world that is equal or the same within; people are born with all types of different personalities and physical features. In that case, the first words noticed are handicap, heavier, and junkyard. The words relate to each other because they describe Harrison’s handicap restrictions. Moreover, handicap has several meanings. In the story a handicap is the restriction of using one’s own intelligence or natural features. On the other hand, it could also mean a condition that markedly restricts a person's ability to function physically, mentally, or socially. It sounds the same but one is the same as being disabled. Within the story, no one is spoken of as being disabled; the complete opposite is spoken. The passage signifies and places emphasis on the importance of equality in the story because Harrison Bergeron is a freak of nature, standing at seven feet tall with the wits and skills to outsmart those around him. But in this society, no man or woman could step outside their boundaries, no matter how smart or beautiful, without the crucial punishment from the state. During the narrative, Vonnegut endeavors to reveal to the readers what society would look like with the loss of the original thought by comparing the society of 2081 an...
