Raymond Douglas Bradbury was an American fantasy, horror, mystery fiction, and one of the more famous science fiction writers. Bradbury’s work has been known for using a lot of detail and imagery to create life and meaning within each story. When I was first introduced to just four of the short stories he has written, I was completely astonished. They were all filled with so much detail, and the way he used the tools given to create meaning really helped his work. It keeps the reader interested and constantly reading further on to know what happens next. Although there are many tools that Bradbury uses throughout his stories to create meaning, personification seems to play a big role in two of them. Imagery is a figurative description or illustration. This tool plays a big role in two more short stories, and is used all throughout his works to make the stories more interesting, appealing, and to be able to make a better mental picture in your mind of what is happening as you read on. For instance, in the story, “A Sound of Thunder,” there is a sign on the wall in the beginning of the tale. But somehow it stays in your mind until the end of the story. Why? Because the imagery he uses helps us remember that sign. It is an extremely important part of the story, and as we read what the sign says, we make a mental picture in our mind to help us see it clearer and to remember it until the end of the story. “Eckel’s glanced across the vast office at a mass and tangle, a snaking and humming of wires and steel boxes, at an aurora that flickered now orange, now silver, now blue.” (A Sound of Thunder) In this quote of the story, it helps us see what the office looks like as Eckel’s is becoming familiar with all of his surroundings. This initially creates a picture in our mind of the office and helps the reader get a better idea of where Eckels is and what kind of situation he is getting himself into. Lastly, there is a quote from “The Pedestrian,” that shows a different kind of imagery within the text. “There was a good crystal frost in the air, it cut the nose and made the lungs blaze like a Christmas tree inside; you …show more content…

Characterization is the act of characterizing or describing the individual quality of a person or thing. Again, I found examples of characterization in two of Bradbury’s short stories, “The Pedestrian”, and “A Sound of Thunder.” “The tombs, ill-lit by television light, where people sat like the dead, the grey or multicolored lights touching their faces, but never really touching them.” (The Pedestrian) Bradbury uses characterization in this quote from the story to show how the people in their houses are glued to technology and don’t really care anything about nature.. There is no one outside with Mr. Mead. He is all alone, but he explains what the people are doing in their houses. “Yes,” said the man behind the desk. “We’re lucky. If Deutscher had gotten in, we would have the worst kind of dictatorship. There’s an anti-everything man for you, a militarist, anti-Christ, anti-human, anti-intellectual, people called us up, you know, joking but not joking.” (A Sound of Thunder) Characterization, in this sense, is being used to explain what kind of person Deutscher is, and what would have happened if he were to have won the
