J. Edgar Hoover was a man of Victorian morals. These Victorian morals remained remained with him throughout his entire life but was the fuse of his complex personality”. They determined J. Edgar Hoover’s thoughts about, God, the country, women and African Americans. Hoover was attached to his mother and always supervised her and that is why when he was offered a scholarship to University of Virginia he declined the offer. Therefore, he went to night school at George Washington University and worked in the Library of Congress. Therefore, in the several Palmer Raids that were conducted, they captured Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Goldman and Berkman were deported back to Russia. Palmer was praised by Congress about his raids but was meant with complaints by Attorney Isaac Schorr. After denying Hoover’s request and suggestion, Attorney Schorr made Hoover’s enemies list and therefore a file was opened. Hoover had won his first important case with the deportation of Emma Goldman. After that, Hoover issued over three thousand warrants for arrest and William B. Wilson found out, the country’s fist secretary of labor and was appalled and disallowed the raids to occur. However, BI Chief Flynn approved the warrants. Numerous raids were conducted and people were arrested and faced deportation. Hoover made sure that at every trial there was an agent present. There was media attention around these deportation hearings and Hoover defended the image of the Department of Justice by writing several memos to Attorney Palmer. He denied that the Department of Justice mistreated those arrests. Nevertheless, a sixty-seven-page report was conducted and the content was not its greatest impact but its signers. Roosevelt became president and Homer Stile Cummings became the new Attorney General. During Roosevelt presidency is when the jurisdiction of the Bureau developed. Congress passed nine major bills due to the lobbying of Cummings and Hoover and were significant because it gave the federal government “for the first time a comprehensive criminal code.” The Bureau was no longer bond to only cases about interstate auto theft, white case slaves, and federal bankruptcy violations. Now they had the ability to go after “national bank robbers, the transportation of stolen property, the transmission of threats, racketeering in interstate commerce and flight of a felon or witness across state lines to avoid prosecution or giving testimony”. The Bureau become went after mobsters such as John Dillinger. Hoover became the face of the Bureau and the G-Men became popular that they were featured in Hollywood films. The Bureau was confronting an image problem and was called several names throughout the years. Therefore, Ed Tamm came up with the new name of the Bureau, FBI, which stood for fidelity, bravery and integrity. Hoover gave full credit to Attorney General Cummings for the name
Although the nation listened with little hope, the genuineness behind the words Roosevelt spoke opened the ears of many. While many ridiculed Hoover and found ways to belittle his status with phrases such as “Hoovervilles” to describe shanty towns or “Hoover Blankets” to describe the newspapers individuals used as warmth, he practiced denial. Corruption is a persistent problem that plagues the world and it knows no boundaries. Transparency International defines it as the “abuse of entrusted power for private gain” (2013). For the purposes of this thread, ‘corruption’ is defined as any individual, collective, or structural act or process that permits the use of public authority or position for private gain. This definition captures the broad and many ways individuals and institutions abuse power and the public trust. In regard to whistleblowing, much conflict stems from the context in which the whistleblower is viewed. We will examine the case of NYPD Narcotics Detective Frank Serpico who was regarded a snitch and a rat by fellow officers who were on the take and complete a what would you do dilemma.
Hoover, as Secretary of Commerce attempted to put his vision of the “associative state” into effect. He did this through his belief in de facto intervention in markets through incentives. In no other market did he display this plan more than agriculture, by creating the Food Administration. Hoover pushed for scientific innovations in agriculture, to produce high quality yields and better methods of farming.
The mission and values of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is up held with strong Constitutional values. Over the years since the FBI was created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. As a progressive during this time period Bonaparte applied his philosophy to forming the FBI with several corps of agents. His thought was that these men should have expertise and not political connections. With the U.S. Constitution based on “federalism” a national government with jurisdiction over matters that cross boundaries, such as interstate and foreign affairs.

On the night of the deaths Fuhrman went to O.J Simpson’s house and supposedly unveiled a glove that he believed took part in the murders. When the evidence of the glove was presented in court Simpson was asked to put it on and unexpectedly the glove didn’t fit. People then began to believe that Mark was setting Simpson up and was trying to frame him. Soon after the glove scandal was public it slowly began to racially divide society and became a watershed moment. A great deal of African-Americans felt as if most of the white people just viewed Simpson as a black male and didn’t even take into consideration other aspects of the case. But a various amount of white people felt as if all the evidence had been presented so he had to be the murderer. A Handful of African-Americans knew that as soon as the evidence of Fuhrman being racist came out he had to of framed Simpson. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was founded in 1908 when the Attorney General appointed an anonymous force of 34 Special Agents to be investigators for the Department of Justice. Before that, the DOJ had to borrow Agents from the U.S. Secret Service. In 1909, the Special Agent Force was renamed the Bureau of Investigation, and after countless name changes, it became The Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935.
The subject of racial issues and inequality has been something that has affected human history and has impacted the world around us. For hundreds of years, racial equality has been an immense problem. Today, racial equality and injustice is being fought in many different aspects. One crucial event in the fight for equality came during the O.J. Simpson murder case. The beating of African-American Rodney King due to the actions of a police officer added to racial turmoil leading up to the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman. The murder case went on to portray many examples of racial tension going on around the world, some of those examples were used against the prosecution throughout the trial. Alphonse Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York to Gabriele and Teresina Capone. He grew up in a rough neighborhood and was a member of two gangs; the Brooklyn Rippers and the Forty Thieves Juniors. Alphonse did well at school until the 6th grade when he was expelled for retaliating against a teacher who hit him. He was fourteen at the time. He became part of the Five Points gang in Manhattan and worked in gangster Frankie Yale's bar, the Harvard Inn, as a bouncer and bartender. While working at the Inn one night, local gangster Frank Gallucio was drinking with his sister at the Harvard Inn. Capone approached the girl to compliment her, and Gallucio took offense to him started a fight. Gallucio pulled a knife and cut Capone's face three times. That is how "Scarface" came to be.

The bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death in Nicole’s home in LA. OJ was boarding a flight when the murders went public; he quickly became the first suspect in the case. The trial went on and the jury found him not guilty of the murders, despite overwhelming evidence showing his connection to the murder. Yet still, even in early 1961, the Crime and Rackets Section of the Justice Department contained only seventeen employees who appeared to show no interest in the matter (U.S. Department of Justice). President John F. Kennedy insisted that organized crime was a severe problem in the country through the publication of books and many public speeches. He urged all federal law enforcement agencies to begin investigating mobster activity more closely and soon had a team of 60 employees working for the Crime and Rackets Section (U.S. Department of Justice). The Kennedy Administration first set its sights upon the illegal activities of gambling and prostitution because they were easier to bust and would eventually starve the gangsters into desperation. In merely the first half of 1963 there is recorded to have been 147 more indicted racketeers than there were in all of 1960 (U.S. Department of Justice). The Attorney General reassured the public by announcing that he knew the names of all the organized crime syndicate leaders and in October 1963 they found a gangster willing to testify in exchange for government protection.
