Our society is full of exciting life changing events that affect people daily. However, some of the events that occur in our society are the opposite of exciting and are life changing in more negative ways. With all of the problems that are society experiences every day, based on race, class, and gender we are leaning towards ways in which we can learn more about the issues occurring to help prevent them from happening again. With the help of It’s a Wonderful Life, Crash, and the chapters that we have discussed in social issues, I believe that we as a society can move towards changes that can have a great and lasting impact on our future. Sadly, most of our society associates the black community, especially males as criminals. The issue of police brutality on black males is becoming an increasing problem in our society today. There have been many incidents of accidental and intentional shootings of black men by police officers occurring recently in our country. For example, last year a man was shot in a darkened stairwell because an officer was startled and shot his gun instead of using his flash flight to get a better look at the darkened space. The officer accused of killing the man, Akai Gurley, has since been found guilty on the charges that followed the horrific incident. This incident in our society can relate to a similar scene from Crash. Officer Tom Hansen was driving home from a shift at work when he saw a man hitchhiking on the side of the road and decided that he would help him out and drive him to where he needed to go. The man enters the car and starts to talk to the officer casually, but when the black man starts making comments about the officer’s interests in music and other things, the officer starts to get irritated and tells the black man that he is going to have to pull over and that he is going to have to find another way of getting to his location. The black man says that he was not making fun of him and tries to show him something that he thinks the officer would like. The black man starts reaching into his pocket and the officer believes that he is reaching for a gun and the officer instructs him to stop what he is doing, but the black man still reaches for his pocket. In result, officer Hansen shoots the black man and then realizes that the black man never had a gun and was trying to show him a religious statue. The officer panics and dumps the black man’s body on the side of the road. This
