The above research has shown that the Mafia has become a wide spread problem. The Mafia has continued to grow and infest our society from the early 1900's.

Although it became a separate coalition, the Cosa Nostra can trace its roots to the Sicilian Mafia, and other Italian criminal groups. The Mob, at its height, stretched from coast to coast, but was most active in New York, the crown-jewel of organized crime. It was a huge influence in other major metropolitan cities like New Jersey, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Texas. In New York five families reigned supreme: the Gambino, Lucchese, Genovese, Bonanno and Colombo families.
Rough Draft Crime has been around since the beginning of time. Few, have made it a profession. The mafia has been influencing politics, economy, and assassinations of high officials. Although they weren’t good people, they influenced America in more ways than most people know. Sneaking mobsters in our government to spread corruption, destroying rival businesses, and assassinating nation’s leaders are just some of the few things the mafia has done to America.

(80) Convicted of income tax evasion in 1931 and sentenced to 11 years in prison, he was released in 1939. After obtaining syphilis, he went on to reside in Miami Beach, Florida. The Mafia was largely made up by 24 separate groups of Italian families. The Italian based mob originated from Sicilian immigrants who brought the idea of the Mafia with them to America and arose as "Cosa Nostra". Italy made a movement against Mafiosi, or members of the Mafia, in Sicily causing many to flee to the United States and eventually join the Cosa Nostra ( MafAm 7). Many members, including notable figures such as Frank Costello, Al Capone and Luciano were involved in some level of organized crime prior to entry into the organization. Additionally there was an attitude against education.
It is believed that modern organized crime began in Italy in the 19th Century with the Sicilian group La Cosa Notra and other Sicilian mafia were more powerful than the Italian government. When Mussolini rose to power he ran out the Italian mafia and many fled to the United States. In 1970, Congress passed the Organized Crime Control Act. The acts purpose was to eradicate organized crime by expanding evidence gathering tools, including more acts as being crimes, enhancing penalties, and allowing the forfeiture of products owned by criminal enterprises. The Rackateer Influenced and Corrupts Organizations Act (RICO) was also a cornerstorne in the fight against organized crime.
This is why being a member of the Mafia is such an honor to its members. Another meaning of the word refers to the Mafia's origins as an acronym in Italian, Morte Alla Franciese Italia Annela. This translates to "Death to French is Italy's Cry" in reference to Italian's distaste for the French during their invasions in the 1800's. The Mafia originated in Sicily as a secret society to unite Sicilian natives against invasions by France and Arabs in the late 1800's. These Mafia members led a revolt against the French and Arabs and gained power over time.
