Issues Related to Surrogacy

The general notions with regards to the possibility of surrogacy seem to have old origins.(LT) The history of Surrogacy goes way back to the beginning of time; in the Holy Bible and in Roman history. Surrogacy has been a controversial medical process that has faced authorized issues since its arrival. Because surrogacy is used to help an infertile couple have a child, many people are overlooking the fact that there are risks and difficult choices to go along with this issue. In the United States, the first known case of surrogacy occurred in California in the mid-1970s (LT). Official reports on this issue published in the United States lack statistical information on the number of births that were the result of surrogacy agreements. However, it is estimated that between the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1990s, the total figure was approximately our thousand (LT). It has been done all over the world, from the United State to India, and only Tradition Surrogacy is allowed in Europe, Greece, France and several other countries. “Traditional Surrogacy is where the child born for the intend couple is genetically related to the intended father and is the biological child of the surrogate” (Eskin). Many people have supported surrogacy and others seemed to have had some contradictions about it. It has caused several debates throughout the world. Some controversial questions are should surrogacy be allowed? Does surrogacy bring a negative impact to communities? And does surrogacy really bring happiness to a couple or a single woman? In most families, from the time the child is handed over by the surrogate mother to the time the child grows up, the topic that the parents aren’t the child’s biological parents is never spoken about. This is a serious issue in one’s life. It is very important for a family to tell the child the truth about everything. Secrets held back in a family can really destroy their relationship forever. As the child gets older, he or she is old enough to understand what is going and has a right to know the truth. However, some people would agree that it is best if you don’t tell your child everything. The famous quote is “What you don’t know won’t hurt you.”
