Non-Muslims usually have their own understanding and misconceptions about Islam as a religion. These misconceptions include: the belief that Muslims seek to worship a different God from other religions do; all Muslim women go through oppression; Islam is only practiced in the Middle East, and most Muslims support terrorism. Islam is, however, defined as peace and submission to God (Griffith, 2012). The population of people practicing Islam in the world is estimated to be more than a billion with a majority of them inhabiting the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Asia. Islam is also the second largest religion in the world after Christianity. However, there are significant differences, especially in the doctrinal and cultural attitudes, personal engagements as well the apprehension towards the correct practices of Islam.

The teachings of Islam are based on Judaism, such as circumcision, distaste for pork, fasting during the first month of the year, and daily prayer. However, the major differences in Judaism and Islam is entrenched in their basis for belief whereby Judaism is based on divine revelation experienced by the people of Israel while Islam is based on prophetic claims of Muhammad who convinced other people to follow him (Levenson, 2012).
