Islamophobia in America In America, there is a hatred lurking around in almost every corner of the nation; a discrimination and social bias that preys on the lives of innocent Muslims. Some people fear for their lives when they see a Muslim board a plane that they’re going to go on. Politicians are using that fear to fuel their popularity in elections. This prejudice even started to become a form of patriotism in the eyes of a concerning number of Americans. A lot of Muslims fear for their own lives in America because they are being looked down upon and even targeted by some people. One very famous example would be of our current president Donald John Trump, and the things he’s said during his campaign and after his inauguration about the Muslim community. “Donald Trump called Monday for a ‘total and complete shutdown’ of the entry of Muslims to the United States ‘until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on’,” Jenna Johnson explains in her article on something Trump has said during his presidential campaign. The fact that Trump is willing to stop of all Muslims from entering America at all because of a distrust he has for them is considered racist in my eyes. After his inauguration into the office, Trump signed an executive order to temporarily ban refugees in 7 Muslim-based countries from entering America for 90 days on January 27th, 2017. The 7 Muslim countries that were banned from traveling to the U.S were Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The problem with this distrust he has for Muslim refugee is redundant; US-born citizens make up a majority of all terrorism cases in America since 9/11, a whole 37% of all terrorist cases (BBC Canada and US). Many of the accusations Donald has made towards the Muslim community are absurd, discriminating, and are outrageous. There will always be this kind of racism in the nation, and in all honesty, will keep on growing. Muslims nowadays are defending themselves against the crude and harsh racism in some parts of America; it is up to the point where Muslim kids aren’t even safe in an environment like school. Something we could do about this growing racism is to slow it down. What I mean by that is, we need to teach our children to respect the people around, Muslims in this case, spread awareness of it, either by digital or physical. The most important and easiest way to do this, though, is to report any of the racial injustices and anti-Muslim actions to a person of higher
