Trade brought them in connection with other civilizations and that’s how the city of Mecca, located in Saudi Arabia became known. The city of Mecca was a mix of religious beliefs, they used to worship many gods and had their own rituals. The world of Islam took place in Mecca where Muhammad was born in 570 CE. He became known as “the Prophet,” he was meant to be God’s final prophet. The main two groups of Islam are the Shia and Sunni; which they were created after Muhammad’s death. The Islam religion as

Islam is a monotheistic religion which is originated from the Middle East or more specifically in the Arabian Peninsula early in the 7th century. This religion was founded on the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed who named this religion after the Arabic word acceptance. Islam has 2 major sects the Sunni and Shi’a. This split occurred when Mohammed died. The Sunni believed that the new leader of Islam should be determined through election but the Shi’a thought that the new leader should be Imam Ali a cousin and son in law of Mohammed. Another branch of Islam is Druze but only a small minority of Muslims who live in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine are followers of this sect (3 Faiths with One God - Islam, Arab American National Museum).
It is said that the religion of Islam was revealed to Muhammad ibn Abdullah, who is known as the Prophet Muhammad. The religion of Islam are as varied as any other however there are certain values and beliefs that identify as Muslim. To understand a person’s faith (of any kind) the first step is to learn some background and understand a little of the beliefs held. A good start understands the cornerstones of a faith; in the case of Islam these are called the five pillars. The five pillars are more based on actions than beliefs; the first is shahadah is an expression of faith and in the oneness of god and that Muhammad received and delivered gods final revelation to the world, and every Muslim is expected to say the shahadah at least once in his or her life, although most say it every day. The second pillar is salat the prayers which each Muslim must recite five time each day facing in the direction of Mecca. They are five different ones and cannot be said all at the same time and so they create a sort of rhythm which structures th...

The religion must provide an argument to convince people to convert, provide a counter argument to combat the oppositions to itself to stand as an argument, and present itself in a way where the reader is convinced that the argument is solid and drives home the point. Much like how the Lodhi Gardens move a person to explore its inside, the Qur’an is a way for the Islamic faith to draw in people to convert to its religion. By comparing the two, the beauty of their arguments presents itself in two different ways. The Lodhi Gardens is aesthetically beautiful from its architecture and the artwork of the inscriptions of the Qur’an on the wall. Meanwhile, the Qur’an’s words are what makes it beautiful by having a solid argument that convinces readers to buy convert, which has lasted from the creation of this religion to now, still converting people to join the Islamic

Islam is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion alongside Judaism and Christianity. It is currently the second largest religion in the world today. Its beliefs come from the Qur'an which literally means "the recitation" which is believed to be a literal transcription of the word of God. Its main prophet is named Muhammad who began Islam by speaking with the angel Gabriel in a cave during his meditation and then acting as an instrument of God to help write the Qur’an. Muhammad then spread Islam to the scattered tribes of Arabia by becoming the leader of Yathrib and using his wonderful leadership abilities to then grow his influence over virtually all of Arabia. Muhammad is known by Muslims to be the seal of the profits because no profits after Muhammad should be considered legitimate. Muhammad also left behind the Hadith or “tradition” which is a collection of writings compiled of reports of Muhammad’s actions as leader of Yathrib. These reports are used as a more specific code of ethics in day to day life and from these reports the 5 Pillars of Islam are derived (Smith 160). Although Islam shares many similarities to Judaism and Christianity it is often viewed in the US with hate derived from preconceived notions following the attack on September 11th 2001. This paper seeks to provide an overview of Islam’s history as well as its two major sects and 5 main pillars to remove preconceived notions and provide a glance into the minds of the Islamic people.
The islamic culture has been using three main languages throughout history. “Arabic, Persian, and Turkish.” This is significant to the achievements of Islam because most of the Islamic culture knew how to read and write. Another achievement in the Islamic culture is poetry. Poetry was a very big part of Islam. According to (World Cultures a Global Mosaic) poetry has been around even before islam was formed. These poems were not only for entertainment, they could also be used to insult their enemies, show their love, and talk about topics like war. This is also significant because these small short stories led to things like books. Another Islamic achievement that shaped the Islamic culture was the arts. “The Quran forbids the worship of idols, many muslims and their religious leaders opposed the portrayal of human or animal images.” This means that the Quran didn’t let Muslims praise their “idols.” As an alternative the Muslims painted, or created pictures or murals of their “idols.” Also, an art called calligraphy which is a lot of elegant ways of writing was used in the Islamic Culture. It grew rapidly, and became a very popular part of the Islamic Culture. Calligraphy is still used at events like weddings to this very day. One of the biggest Islamic achievements was Islamic Architecture. For example they built mosques, which is a building in which they worship. Also, due to some help from the “Byzantine Empire Muslims” were very experienced “in building domes.” An example of a dome is “Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.” The dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is so significant because it was, “The first work of Islamic Architecture.” Also, more groundbreaking Islamic architecture is the “palaces built by...

In addition to the many different ways the followers of Islam spread the religion and expanded their empire, the religion itself was appealing to many people outside of Arabia. The Islamic religion contained many beliefs and practices that were extremely appealing to others. One of these beliefs was that Islam is an uncompromising monotheistic religion, meaning there is only one God. In addition, there was an extremely well and highly developed set of legal codes and a strong sense of community among the followers of Islam. The five pillars were also extremely appealing because they provided the basis for religious unity. The humbleness and prayerfulness of the Islamic people was admirable to those of other faiths.
Islamic art and architecture is a blend from three or more different cultural traditions from the east. The Arab, Turkish, and Persian traditions are three such traditions that were adopted into the Islamic art and architecture design. The best expressions of Islamic art and architecture are found in Muslim mosques. The mosque serves as a place where Muslims can come together for prayer of Islam. Mosques are also a center for information, education, and dispute settlement. One of the most famous mosques of the Islamic art is the Great Mosque of Samarra in preset day Iraq. To understand these intricacies of this inter-relation between function and use of architecture and elements that influences it, the case of Islamic architecture can be studied. As per Spahic Omer, “Islamic architecture is an architecture whose function, and to a less extent, forms, are inspired primarily by Islam”. According to Omer, Islamic architecture functions as a representation of Islam translated into reality at the hands of the Muslims, besides being used as a representation to identify Islamic culture and civilization (Omer 484). Omer also emphasizes that Islamic architecture also functions as a field for implementation of Islam and as a vehicle for its promotion and advancement by means of perception, visualization, planning, execution and utilization and by means of innovative practical plans, designs and structural solutions (Omer 486). Thus we see how architecture may cater to a sublime function of making changes to and accepting changes from external factor like religion.
...ethics, and so forth. The crucial piece of information to remember about this religion is that they greatly emphasis unity and have a great amount of diversity. Even though it is a diverse religion, all of the Muslims are monotheistic and solely believe that Allah is the creator of everything, including humans. As a human being they believe that they are in debt to God or simply stated as according to Seyyed Hossein Nasr, “Therefore, all that we are and all that we have belongs to God for which we are indebted to Him and for whose gifts we must give thanks (shukr)” . God is the Absolute and the main point of the Islamic religion is that it is crucial to worship him and follow his commands, and that will lead to peace among everyone. This particular religion has continued to rapidly grow throughout the world and as with most religions, it will continue to grow.
