Texting has become a new way to talk and communicate with people around the world, but with texting we often use slang words, and don’t spell words correctly. Which makes you think, is texting killing language? Texting has changed the meanings of some words that we use in everyday writing, but it is not affecting writing. Texting by itself is becoming its own language and is not ruining the writing language we already know. A Ted Talk from John McWhorter, “Txtng is killing language. JK!!!” Explores the idea that texting is not ruining the way we write, but creating a new language on its own. Texting is not writing because it is very loose, and when we speak we don’t speak like we talk. There are no formal rules when talking as well as texting.
Writing, according to an article in Times Magazine titled “Is Texting Killing the English Language” by John McWhorter, is an art that has been around for about 5,500 years. Since writing is deliberate and takes more time to compose, it’s usually better thought out and sounds more sophisticated. Speech, on the other hand, is more of an “unconscious” practice.
Numerous studies have shown how texting can actually improve our literacy skills. In the article “2b or Not 2b” by David Crystal, he believes that is a new form of communication and will not harm our language in any way. He states that a study has proven people who use a lot of abbreviations in their text messages tend to score higher on reading and vocabulary test. According to David Crystal, to be able to write well the first thing you have to know is how letters relate to sounds throughout each language.
I personally think that texting does indeed have tremendous effect on formal writing, Texting has its costs and benefits. So while we texting we could use the spellcheck feature to correct our spelling mistakes as guide or a teacher to help us spelling it correctly next time. On the other hand, we might have become dependent on such Features. Auto-correct doesn’t pick up all of the errors for example sometimes when you write a sentence with the word to, the device may not recognize that you are using the wrong word.
In his article, Crystal claimed that texting helps children to be better at their spelling and writing and they tend to score higher on test of reading and vocabulary because of the abbreviations used in their messages. How often do we text? Text messaging is a very useful way to communicate; but, there are occasions where texting is unnecessary, for example in meetings, watching movies, interacting with family, and even in the shower. However, while texting can be overused, it can also help us get to know one another in easier and faster ways. In Natalie Y. David Crystal, a professor at the University of Wales, writes “2b or Not 2b?” in support of text messaging. He insists, despite those who underestimate or negate the beneficial influence text messaging has on language proficiency, that “there is increasing evidence that [texting] helps rather than hinders literacy” and that the fairly recent form of communication has actually been around for a while and “is merely the latest manifestation of the human ability to be linguistically creative and to adopt language to suit the demands of diverse settings. In contrast, Jeffery Kluger argues in “We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging” that text messaging is rapidly becoming a substitute for more genuine forms of communication and is resulting in difficulty among young peoples of our generation to hold a face-to-face conversation, engage in significant nonverbal expression, and ultimately build effective relationships with family, friends and co-workers. Both writers’ present valid arguments, however, my personal experience with text messaging has led me to agree more with Crystal’s view on the matter. Text messaging is indeed having a positive effect on society by making frequent texters primarily aware of the need to be understood, as well as offering betterment of spelling and writing through practice, and reinventing and expanding on a bygone dimension of our language through the use of rebuses and abbreviations.
Is texting really killing our language? Or are we allowing texting to kill our language? There are many ways to use texting, maybe just the ways some of us are using texting is killing our language. According to John Mcwhorter texting is writing as we speak.
In both stories “Text-Speak is Harming Teens’ Writing Skills” and “Text-Speak Can Help Students” they involve in arguing over what to call this “text-speech”, whether it being harmful or not, I would support both of the fact that it would support and harm the way of writing today, but in the way that you are putting it. The way of typing while you're writing an essay, you wouldn’t want to say: Lol (laugh out loud), tbh (to be honest) , smh (shaking my head), or R4T (Ready for Tonight). Spelling them out is better than just typing out the initials, because a lot of people don’t understand what the person is communicating to them. Yet, it can help when you are in a hurry to work or if your talking to someone on the internet.
The use inventive spelling, abbreviations. As high school students start to use short texting, some of their grades dropped due to the spelling errors they make. So many teens get used to wing abbreviating that they just begin to write that that way. Some teenagers writing skills have turned into sentence fragments, because of the limited space they put into text sentence. Cell phones of this time have a vast amount of technology that goes with them. There is auto correct for those of us using smart phones and spell check to allow people that want to type out everything in whole to revise and edit the words in which they have intended to use. Spell check personally helps me to finish the words that I have a hunch on how to spell words, but I’m not entirely sure, and I am not sure, call it laziness it’s just easier.
