Freedom is the power or the right to act, to speak or to think as you like without limitations or hindrances. When you view schooling as a source of freedom and apply this definition, I question if schooling, is really a source of freedom. When you define oppression as unjust treatment or control, I question if schooling is a source of oppression. The terms are totally opposite by definition, but when applied to schooling as a source, they are more alike than opposing. The term schooling creates additional hesitation. Schooling as a noun means being trained or educated, this definition presents itself as a source of freedom and/or oppression. These types of schools are extremes, but also exist. Schooling as a source of freedom or oppression, can be found in the funding of schools, the labeling of students, and the curriculum standards. Some students have used schooling as a source of freedom, consequently, I have witnessed others, view schooling as an obstacle. Both impacted lives positively and negatively. School funding has been disproportionate, so much, that additional legislation was passed to finance disadvantaged schools. Schooling is a source of freedom, if your school, is properly funded. Schools that were able to educate students with the latest equipment, the most qualified educators, and a great support system, schooling was freedom. Freedom that will qualify you to the best opportunities. My first year teaching was with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system, Charlotte, NC. The school had a PTA budget of over one million dollars. In addition to the allocated state and federal funding, the school could designate those resources. I believe that schooling should enable its students to identify the flaws in society and seek to take action to address these flaws. While I do not believe that society, as is, is terrible, I do acknowledge that there are clear flaws in many social and political systems in this country. Thus, I believe that schools should serve as the educational means for identifying these issues. I believe that society and schooling depend heavily on each other. Schooling should not serve as a mechanism to maintain the current social order – in fact, it should do the opposite. Society should look to schooling to fix its flaws, and schooling should view society as a permanent work in progress. Schooling cannot act as a politically neutral entity, meaning that school should act to advance the political views of its students. Plato, Thoreau, and Sartre suggested that human life should be free. They had different points of view about freedom, but combining Plato's freedom in mind, Thoreau's freedom in nature, and Sartre's freedom in subjectivity of individual gives people the clear and perfect image of freedom. Understanding freedom is the first step to find freedom in the real life. So in relevant, college students have freedom to think critically. Students' freedom is able to study whatever they want, and find out their own roads to the bright future. However, how to use correctly freedom is the hard question to students in this real life.
Education is the main source to gain knowledge to begin a successful journey to life's opportunities and advantages. The true value of an education is only what the students, teachers, and administrators make of it to create a foundation for the students of today and tomorrow. Although there are values of having equal rights within a public school education, many rights have been diminished due to certain school policy rules. Relatively new public school policies such as the Zero Tolerance Policy and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) have influenced what sociologists call a, "School to Prison Pipeline". Zero-Tolerance policies and No Child Left Behind policies are preventing children from getting a quality education that children of today deserve.
Erin Gruwell began her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where the school is integrated but it’s not working. Mrs. Gruwell is teaching a class fill with at-risk teenagers that are not interested in learning. Schools will succeed despite their financial circumstances if they have the basic components of motivated students, parent support, caring teachings, and strong central leadership. While this is the typical model of a suburban school system, Wilson High School proves that it can work anywhere. When ones thinks of urban public schools, overcrowded classes, underpaid teachers, and a lack of resources often come to mind. The fact is these problems can happen anywhere. While the environment at Kennedy could never be compared to the worst DC high school, the assumptions made against these schools are the same. By erasing these notions and confronting the problems one by one, we will be one step closer to reaching equal education for all.
Freedom, equality, independence, and righteousness are common terms associated with the beautiful country of America. Many immigrants and foreigners have embarked on the journey to reach the beautiful valleys and gardens of a country built on values such as unity and individualism. The statue of Liberty, alone, is the universal symbol for freedom which stands in the heart of New York City greeting thousands of immigrants each year; embodying hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life in America. It stirs the desire for freedom in people all over the world; Muslims in Burma who fall under the threat of extortion, women in Egypt who are not given a voice, or people in South Africa who struggle to live because of ensuing rivalry battles. The United States is a safe haven on its own to millions across the world who are subjected to tyranny or despotism. If America is a place for opportunity and freedom to practice our own rights, then why should our institutions ban such an important emblem like freedom of speech? A quality so inherently important that molds the thoughts and personalities of our own students; the future of America. If our students are subjected to live in fear like the rest of the world, then how is America distinct from the oppressors and wrongdoers? How will our nation's colleges and universities fuel the curiosities of future healers and entrepreneurs without letting them question the status quo and think freely?
Education is the foundation to every society. Taking a look back into history and even in our own world today, whenever there is an attempt to oppress a group of people, the first thing that is taken from the group being oppressed is their right to an education. Look at our own history, before the civil rights movement, African-Americans may have been allowed to attend a school, but often times this schooling was worthless compared to the one being received by the white community.
In a place of extreme torment, this teacher is capable of bringing a light of faith in her students and from her determination she is able to show that is worthwhile to make a difference. Now days education is only about standardized testing and teaching a curriculum, rather than becoming a role model to students and change their perspectives of life. Therefore this movie teaches the enormous value and impact that a teacher can have in someone 's life and encourages teachers to exceed the limits and make education meaningful for students. Proper school funding is one of the keys to having a successful school. Americans believe that funding is the biggest problem in public schools. School improvements revolve around funding. There needs to be funding not only in the successful schools but also the schools that aren’t doing as well. In documentary, Waiting for Superman, it talks about how smaller class sizes will help students. Funding is what will help the smaller class sizes. State funding mechanisms are subject to intense political and economic scrutiny (Leonard). Studies have shown that funding is inversely related to accreditation levels (Leonard). School funding needs to be increased, but there must be accountability as well.

The film Freedom Writers directed by Richard La Gravenese is an American film based on the story of a dedicated and idealistic teacher named Erin Gruwell, who inspires and teaches her class of belligerent students that there is hope for a life outside gang violence and death. Through unconventional teaching methods and devotion, Erin eventually teaches her pupils to appreciate and desire a proper education. The film itself inquiries into several concepts regarding significant and polemical matters, such as: acceptance, racial conflict, bravery, trust and respect. Perhaps one of the more concentrated concepts of the film, which is not listed above, is the importance and worth of education. This notion is distinctly displayed through the characters of Erin, Erin’s pupils, opposing teachers, Scott and numerous other characters in the film. It is also shown and developed through the usage of specific dialogue, environment, symbolism, and other film techniques.

Freedom of expression has been a long debated topic within schools across the globe. There are many variations on this such as dress codes, religion rules, and the prevention of electronic device and internet usage. Many people disagree with the usage of these guidelines as it is restricting to the young adult who is having to put up with it and work around it. The first amendment states and allows freedom of speech. Although this doesn’t state “freedom of expression” it does apply in multiple cases such as “Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District (1969)” (Jacobs). Everybody has the right to freedom of expression but, unfortunately, in schools, we have been restricted on flaunting our personality with codes and rules.
Academic freedom should be a liberty granted to students and teachers of all ages. “Research in cognitive, developmental and educational psychology shows that learning and development are active self-regulated processes that require the freedom to seek information, to formulate and express your own ideas, and to engage in discussion. Intellectual freedom is crucial to intellectual development from kindergarten to college” (Moshman). Many teachers that are tenured into a university of school district can say and do just about anything they want, whereas a teacher that has been apart of an institution for five years will be removed from the school for something the tenured colleague would not even be questioned about. In high schools the administration is so worried about parents complaints and how it will effect their reputation as a school that they let it affect the education that their students are receiving. Allowing grade school students the ability to be apart of the process building their schedule and education would be a step in the right direction. At this age students want to be more independent and are willing to experience all types of classes and learning types.
