Does Odyssey finally deserve to be considered a hero? Or has the mistakes Odysseus made in life and on life’s journey make Odysseus a villain. This is the question that needs answered from Homer’s The Odysseus. In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes on a 20 year journey to Troy to brawl in the Trojan war for 10 years. He then spends another 10 years finding his way back home to Ithaca to be with his son Telemachus and wife Penelope. On his way he encounters many obstacles, including gods, goddesses, Ciconians and Cyclops. From the voyage that started it all from Troy to Ithaca Odysseus is an amazing hero and leader even though there had been some mistakes on the way. Calypso is told by Odysseus, that even though there is no comparison between her and Penelope, he still loves Penelope. Odysseus states to Calypso “Look at my wife Penelope. She falls far short of you, your beauty, stature. She is mortal after all and you, you never age or die.. nevertheless I long- I pine, all my days- to travel home and see the dawn of my return” (Homer 239). Odysseus seems loyal to his family. The crew and Odysseus devise a plan to get Polyphemus son of Poseidon drunk so he and his men remain able to escape. While talking to the main Cyclops Odysseus states to Polyphemus “So you ask me the name I’m known by Cyclops? I will tell you, but you must give me a guest gift as you’ve promised, nobody- that is my name- nobody- so my mother and father call me; all my friends” (Homer 223).
