Have you ever wanted to do one project that determines your entire grade? I know I would not. If you mess up once you wouldn't even be able to pass the grade. Most kids would forget they even had an assignment. They won't be tested every 6-8 weeks, which is a great way to show what they learned. It would be too hard on all the students. Being graded periodically is a much better way to grade than one big project. First of all, if you mess up just once you would automatically fail the project. Who would want to fail because of one mistake? Imagine you getting a piece of information wrong, or putting it in the wrong spot. They would be so caught up in hanging out with friends because of tons of free time. It would be insanely hard to remember. Most students would not work on it everyday if they do remember. They would work on it probably once every other day. For the ones that do work it on everyday they would get it done before everyone else and have tons of free time, which is not good for students they will forget everything they learned. It is too much for the students to handle. Lastly, is that the students will not be tested on what they learned. Doing this keeps their mind in check. They will not remember if they just do one big project. Also doing this helps their grade a ton. Instead of doing on big project they would do different work everyday. If they get good grades on all of those they will definitely pass the class with ease. It is very easy compared to just one huge project. The grades will be very good if they don't do the project. Some people say that one big project is a good way to test the students. They say will get a good grade if they pay attention and try their hardest. They say it because the children will have tons of time to get the best information possible, therefore getting a great grade. I do not agree with any of these statements. It would create a stronger future for our children, helps teach quality, and helps the parents that do not have the time to teach their children these things. Visualization: Imagine being able to leave high school with a better knowledge of how to balance a textbook, create a simple meal, pay taxes, or buy a house. We would all be more motivated to have an even more successful future.
In 2010, Alyssa faced one of the horrors students face: bringing home a bad report card. Afraid of her parents’ reaction, the girl hid her report card to avoid showing the grim 76, for she, like other kids, does not want to be grounded for it. However, should students feel pressured to get a high grade? Should kids fear getting a bad grade? In reality, no parent should punish their children because of a “bad” grade; such action is detrimental to the students’ health and relationships. There is a more healthful, efficient way to improve grades, although, in reality grades are insignificant in today’s society.

Finally some people say the tests are good because they show how the students are doing. Without the tests there is no good way to tell how the students are doing and who needs help. There is too much time spent on testing. There is 20-25 hours a year spent on testing and that does not count practice or learning time. Some may say tests are the best way to show how students are doing but there is still too much time spent on testing.
It would be better for a students mental health to have to deal with a lot of stress due to an assignment less often. Also, when the passing of a class is determined by one or two tests, this prepares students for even bigger tests worth even more when they leave undergraduate school and start graduate school or apply for a competitive job. Having your grade depend on two tests can be very stressful but, this is preparing students for there future. They will begin to get used to high stake tests and learn how to prepare for them which is a necessary skill. For students to be able to do well on standardized test they rely on their teachers. Several teachers interviewed said they spent hours of extra planning time and hundreds of dollars to create more interesting lessons. They said they must be supremely organized and strict enforcers of classroom rules. (Watanabe). Some teachers are pressured to the point that they make education all about the test and up to the test. The pressure to improve students test performance in California and across the country often meets with disdain from teachers who say they are compelled to throw out creativity and “teach to the test.” (Watanabe). If somehow the test were based on what students learn, then students could score better. Educators are unanimous that high-stakes test should be aligned with curriculum and instruction-taught and are expected to know – and that teachers should be involved in the process. Various forms of informal and formal formative assessment methods are conducted as learning takes place, continuously through teacher observations, questioning through individual interactions, group discussions and open-ended tasks (McMillan, 2011). tests can tell us a lot about students and be used to inform and guide teaching, rather than simply to determine grades. Teachers can learn a lot from test results if they analyse the data generated to inform their teaching and learning programs (Perso, 2009). However, high stakes tests may result in students becoming stressed, leading to misreading questions, careless working and incomplete answers (Booker et al., 2010).
With this, students become so knowledgeable that mastery learning is almost always achieved. Finally, I like the idea of small class sizes. With fewer students, it is easier to focus on unique needs and interests, which will help the students significantly. With interest, comes fun, and with fun, comes learning.
It is important that teachers give children a fair chance to show their knowledge when assessing. “The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback that can be used to improve student performance” (Orange 2000). Teachers assess children to ensure that they are understanding the material, and to make sure they are learning. For young children, tests should never be the only criteria for assessment. Getting children to work together on projects which require problem solving is a great way for them to interact with each other and learn mathematical concepts on the way. It will also help them to boost their communication skills. Teachers can also facilitate learning by scaffolding the children’s learning and offering guidance when needed. There are many things that can help to get good grades in college possible, doing them is the challenging part. In order to be successful in life, college students should get the best grades by staying organized, taking good notes, and maintain an effective study habit.
Assessment is a tool used in the classroom every day. It is used to measure a student’s mastery of a skill or knowledge of a given subject. It is also what demonstrates to the teacher what the students have learned. Educators use that information to determine if they need to re-teach to a specific student, group, or the entire class. They can also use that information to determine the rate of their teaching. Assessments are important because, as teachers, we need to know what difficulties our students have and what needs to be refined for them. While I do believe in assessment and feel that it is one of the key components of teaching, I am more concerned with a child’s process of learning rather than the overall product that comes from it. This is where grades come in for me. Grades determine the students’ level of mastery on a subject, nothing more. Grades should not be the exclusive indicators that a student has learned the information that is presented to them. It is the things a student learns along the way that truly matter and sometimes cannot be measured.
When an exam is designed well and has the sole purpose of testing the student’s knowledge on material that was presented during the semester it should expand the student’s knowledge. It should also allow both the teachers and students to see the progress and accomplishments that were achieved during the semester. Good results from exams should encourage students to continue their journey of learning. This puts a large amount of pressure on the teacher to make sure the exam is relevant to the information presented and that students are fully prepared for the exam. (Jensen)
