Steven Horwitz stated that capitalism is good for the poor. He backs up his argument by bringing forth historical evidence and facts. He mentions that today over half of America’s poor own many household appliances and also a cell phone, they are just poor compared to wealthy in the United States. Capitalism has helped the poor because of man’s inventions and then innovation. One thing that new or large businesses do is open up new work opportunities, if a poor American takes advantage and applies for a job, he has taken their first step out of poverty. Horwitz assures that, “The biggest gains in the fight against poverty have occurred in countries that have opened up their markets.” When a country opens up their market, it causes economic growth, which spreads throughout the population, helping everyone. Capitalism is an economic system where people and private businesses are able to control their own trade and means of production for profit. It emerged as technology, production and trade began to increase. During the industrial revolution, capitalism started to influence people more. Some characteristics of capitalism are capital accumulation, competitive markets and wage labor. The government isn’t supposed to interfere with trade. Individual markets raise or lower their prices due to competition and demand for goods. There has been a lot of debate over the usefulness of capitalism. Some believed capitalism had negative effects while others saw more benefits. Adam Smith and Andrew Carnegie pushed for a capitalistic society, but had different beliefs on how economic wealth should be distributed; Karl Marx advocated for a communistic society where wealth was evenly distributed.
Some people believe that poverty is beneficial. For example, Herbert J. Gans. is a big fan of poverty. In his essay, “The Uses of Poverty: The Poor Pay All,” he explains the benefits of having poor people in society. “The existence of poverty ensures that society’s “dirty work” will be done.” -Herbert J. Gans (Gans, 1971.) He believes that the poverty level needs to be relatively high to support the comfortable lives of middle and upper class people. The working poor support the other classes. However, it is very difficult for people in the lower class to make a move upwards. Generally in the “dirty jobs” pay very little and there is little to no opportunity for advancement. Often times, there is an ascribed status for those in the lower class. Since their parents were poor, they have little to no opportunities to have a life any different. The study of capitalism reveals that this type of system inspires creative thinking and rewards successful innovation financially. This drives the economy forward in an excellent way. However, a system which is largely credited for alleviating “human misery” is actually perpetuating it (Goldberg, 6). Capitalism inherently fuels inequality leading to poverty among the powerless. Jonah Goldberg in his article, Capitalism Has Lifted Billions Out of Poverty, attributed the economic theory to ending poverty, but failed to recognize that capitalism’s lofty goals are merely fulfilled on paper.
