Is aviation industry striving to be environmentally friendly?
Background: The aviation industry is known to have a large impact on the environment. The environmental impact of aviation occurs due to engines of the aircrafts that emit excessive noise, and particulates gases which contribute to air pollution. By 2050,it is forecasted that the aviation’s contribution to the global anthropogenic carbon emissions will increase by 3% and it will represent 5% of total greenhouse gas emissions.(Mrazova,2014) Throughout the history of aviation, the challenge of reducing the aircraft environment impact has been a main drive for research and development, bringing with it greater efficiency for airlines and better environmental performance. Therefore, is the aviation industry striving to be environmentally friendly?

The company also strives to develop green innovations and initiatives throughout the industry. Currently, Airbus’ A380 is the most environmentally-friendly commercial jetliner in the aviation industry. (“A380 Environment Facts,” n.d.) Airbus’ A350 XWB is setting a new standard of efficiency in jetliners, with 25 per cent lower fuel consumption compared to other aircraft manufacturers. Its all-new fuselage is built-in with carbon-fibre reinforce plastic (CFRP) which promotes lesser fuel burn and simpler maintenance. In 2014, Airbus launched an industry initiative in partnership with British Airways, Heathrow Airport and NATS (National Air Traffic services), to study and develop operational procedures to minimise the noise impact around London’s Heathrow
