In life, we all face responsibility and challenges to some degree. Some people may have lots of responsibility and challenges on their hands when others have very little of it. But in the eyes many, parenting would have to be one of the most demanding jobs due to the huge amounts of responsibility, challenge, and guidance involved. Being a parent is never easy as there will be ups and downs as time moves on. At the end of the day, it’s the parents who shape the children- influencing their everyday lives. In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, we meet many parents who fall under different classes. There’s the Ewells- part the lowest class with less care in their family, the Cunninghams -part of the lower middle class struggling with finance, and then there’s the Finches- being in the upper middle class. Now, each of these parents have their own style of parenting. This is because of the circumstances each of them are in. And with Scout Finch (daughter) being the protagonist we get to see her father, Atticus Finch, in action. I strongly believe that Atticus is a good father because his morals mean well, his actions are great, and his image is perfect.
We can clearly see from the book that Atticus is a good man. He is well mannered, kind, and very wise. We never see Atticus act as oddly as some of the other character do. And since they’re all living in hard times, the Great Depression, it doesn’t help that the economy is crap but for some strange reason Atticus seems to be the only person that is calm and collected- normal. For example, there’s this one section of the book where the whole town is going crazy because of a house fire. Everybody is losing their minds but luckily for Maycomb, Atticus was one of the few peopl...

...as more important than image in his eyes. There’s also this one part where his children(and the rest of the town) watched as Atticus shot Tim Johnson- a rabid dog. But before this, Scout was stressing over the fact that her father seemed too boring and too plain. But as Atticus got rid of the dog she found out about the secret skill Atticus possessed. This caused Scout to wonder why they were never informed of Atticus’ skill- would it have to do with his image? Probably- and that’s how Atticus would have wanted it.
Parenting is a challenge for all of us- whether you’re part of a higher class, a low one, or the middle, there WILL always be obstacles in the way. What separates the good parents from the others is how and why they handle things. And with good morals, great actions, and an even greater image Atticus Finch of “To Kill a Mockingbird” IS a good father.
In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, we are introduced to the character Atticus. He is a hard working single parent of two who is kindhearted and does what he believes is right and treats everyone equally. Being such a hard worker, his mind is often on work, even at home, which means less time spent with his children. While Atticus may make some mistakes as a parent, overall he is an admirable father. Some may believe that my opinion is wrong and believe that Atticus failed as a father.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents the idea that respect is demonstrated by treating people the way people want to be treated so that others can give one that respect back. Social justice requires respect because if one did not have respect for others views and thinking, then people would stop tolerating each other and become selfish in their thoughts and actions. The character of Atticus Finch demonstrates respect by the way he treats those of different gender, how he teaches his children, and how he treats outcasts of a town.
Although Atticus is not like every other parent, he shows his love to his kids in his own ways. He does not need to be kissing them, hugging them or buying them things to show his affection for them. His ways are unique ways that show that Atticus is a positive parental figure. Another good piece of evidence that shows that Atticus is a positive parental figure is that he sets a good example for the children. He sets a good example by being honest and telling them why he has to defend Tom Robinson even if that decision jeopardizes his reputation and the family. When Atticus was talking to Scout about defending Tom he said, “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (100). These words show that Atticus values equality and justice and it is setting an excellent example for the kids to follow at such a young age. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, an African American man, because he believes in equality for all. Atticus also mentioned that before he tells the children to do something or follow values he, Atticus, must display them first, and he
What does it mean to be a good parent? The most common definition of a good parent is one who makes their children feel valued and loved, by teaching them the difference between right and wrong. At the end of the day, the most essential thing is to create a nurturing environment where your children feel like they can mature into confident, independent, and caring adults. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird defines what a true parent really is thought hardships and struggles throughout the book. The story is set in the Depression era of a little town in southern Alabama that is struggling with thick prejudice on a colored rape case. The story is told through a character
“The key to being a good dad...well, sometimes things work out just the way you want. Sometimes they don't. But you gotta hang in there. Because when all is said and done, 90% of being a dad is just showing up” ( Modern Family). Fathers aren’t perfect, but they can be the best role models to their children by simply being there for them like Atticus. He shows how to be a great father in the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. While Atticus makes mistakes as a parent, he educates his children with wisdom they’ll use throughout their lives. Atticus teaches his children how to see from different point of views, violence is never the answer, and what real courage means.
Atticus did what no other person would do in Maycomb, he defended a negro man in court. In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Atticus is a lawyer that has to defend Tom Robinson because Tom was accused of raping a white lady. Others in Maycomb don’t agree with Atticus because he took a black man’s words over a white woman’s word. Atticus is a man of morals with integrity, so he did the right thing and took Tom Robinson’s side. It makes sense for Atticus to take a stand to defend Tom Robinson because he follows his morals and the golden rule.
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would like to have and advocates for what they believe in. In an instant bestseller classic novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes Atticus Finch as a role model and still is to be considered one today. Atticus Finch, being a single father in the 1930s has an extremely different parenting style compared to the other parents. Despite the fact of living in a town full of racism, Atticus is one individual with a very different opinion towards African Americans. Furthermore, Atticus is a very humble man. In addition, Atticus is courageous to defend an African American, Tom Robinson. Not to mention that Atticus is an upstanding mortal, he also has extraordinary parenting skills.
There are countless factors when one would need to reflect on when deciding whether a parent is admirable or not. However, when it comes to Atticus Finch, the phrase, “an admirable parent” describes Atticus completely.
Although the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has over thirty million copies in print since its publication in 1960, it is one of the most commonly banned novels from high school reading lists. Set in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s, the novel follows the adventures of Jean Louise Finch, affectionately known as Scout, and her older brother Jem as they encounter the social injustices in Maycomb when their father, Atticus, is appointed as a lawyer for the defendant in a controversial case. One might ask why it is often banned and most professionals will agree that the novel contains racism and offensive language; though, all books have flaws – wouldn’t one agree? However, some individuals challenge the flawed characters of the novel rather than the language and the racism. Take Atticus Finch for example, the father of Scout and Jem, a highly regarded lawyer, and an active citizen of Maycomb; what would the world be like without men like Atticus? Many consider Atticus to be a moral hero to readers and a model of integrity for lawyers. Although Atticus Finch is a highly respectable and kind-hearted man, he has several flaws as a character which diminish him as a true hero of the novel.
The most essential responsibility of a parent is to keep their children safe; most will not intentionally but their children in harm’s way. Harper Lee writes about a parent whose children are endangered and altered because of a decision that he makes. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch chooses to represent Tom Robinson in court, putting his children in potential danger, earning respect from numerous people surrounding him, and teaching his kids valuable life lessons; if individuals always chose to do what is right, instead of settling for the easy solution, difficulties could be often eliminated.
Throughout the novel, Atticus shares his philosophical and personal morals to his children, Jem and Scout. The iconic quote that gave the book
Some may question the parenting style of others and that is just how humans work. They doubt the way others do things because it is not how they themselves would do it. Atticus Finch is a good father because he taught his children bravery through his self-control, he is determined to teach Jem and Scout the value of respecting people, no matter who they are, and he teaches his children that life involves making difficult decisions sometimes. Atticus is one of those people that everybody should look up to and want to be more like him because despite all the racism that happened and disrespect he got, he stood with his head held high and made sure his children did too.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee suggests that Atticus is a model parent. Atticus gives guidance to Jem and Scout, and he treats them with fairness and honesty. He tries to bring them up as best he can as a single parent.
...fore reprimanding them, and treats his neighbors--even the seemingly odd ones like Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose--and his clients, black folks included, in the same manner. Even though his own sister is preoccupied with distinguishing the Finch family from similar or slightly poorer people, Atticus remains stedfast in his convictions. He always tries to see the good in others, although he knows man’s tendency toward evil all too well. Atticus keeps hope throughout his life, always reminding his children to keep a positive attitude by not worrying when troubles come their way. By her father’s great influence, Scout finds, at the close of the story, that her father was right all along: the best way to interact with others is to treat all people with kindness and respect. Atticus serves as an accurate standard of good and evil indeed.

As Atticus, the father of the protagonist faces the moral dilemma in chapter 29-30 of the incident with Bob Ewell. Atticus moral dilemma will reveal his character and his beliefs.
