Rhys Southan’s essay “Is Art a Waste of Time?” is about art and if it can really help people who are suffering or is it just better to hand over your money. In Yo-Yo Ma’s essay “necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” he focuses more on art being used as educational purposes to essentially create more innovative/empathetic people. Instead of focusing so much on STEM, the author states that we should incorporate art too. Although some people might say art does not play a role in making the world a better place. In “Art is a Waste of Time” it is said that “art’s impact grows by reaching larger audiences” (Southan,439). So for example, the more people who see that picture of a police officer beating a black man then the more impact it makes and the more people will empathize and want to do something to make a change therefore bringing awareness to the issue. Through art is how we find out about many issues going on in the world and without that we would just be a chaotic world full of unaware people. Art can also bring awareness for different cultures because often times people are ignorant or disrespectful to people of different cultures because they don’t know anything about it. If people are exposed to different cultures either through settings like school or the workplace people will be more aware. So everyone will be respectful of each other when it comes to their cultures, their beliefs, and values. In “Is Art a Waste of Time?” Rhys Southan examines Effective Altruists’ (EA’s), an organization that advocates people to pursue a career that provides money for generous donations (Southan). Southan also explains how EA’s believe that it is an ethical choice in giving up one’s hobbies to increase their income for those living in extremities (Southan). Despite the EA’s view of ethical standards, there are many variations of what people consider to be right and wrong behavior. Jobs such as being a teacher, a doctor or an artist, all have related ethical principles in which could define how moral a person is in their occupation. An ethical career is one that allows a person to have integrity, compassion and passion when helping others.
In his book Art for God’s Sake, Philip Ryken breaks away from “… a negative view of the arts” (11) which he perceives in the church and argues for the evangelistic and philosophical value of art. He attempts to defend the arts and outline how they ought to be used within the church, but his vision falls short. Art for God’s Sake contains important ideas, but it is poorly researched and fails to develop a complete vision of what it looks like for art to glorify God.

The arts play a valued role in creating cultures and developing and documenting civilizations. The arts teach us how to communicate through creative expression. If a person is not taught to have self-discipline, problem-solving skills or how to work with others then that person will have trouble while working in today 's workforce. No matter what job or career someone obtains the person will in some way have to develop at least one of these skills to get by. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
