Toward the end of page 232, Foley states, "But juxtaposition is not coherence" what I think she means by this is that by simpling putting things together or limiting students to just put three things together it makes them feel like they have mastered structure but in reality they are only limited to showing coherence in those three aspects. Also juxtaposition is comparing two things while coherence is something that makes sense as a whole. This relates to the five-paragraph essay because if you are just limited to using three examples you do show coherence in those examples but it doesn't allow you to learn something new. On the other hand his list of qualifications advice you to disobey and to not follow the structure because we don't learn from what we expect , we learn from what surprises us. I have experienced moments when a writing assignment deters thinking for example when they put a set length of words it just makes you focus in reaching the word limit and if you can reach the word limit with information you already know then there's no need to research and learn something new. In general when they put certain restrictions or limits for the essay all you are looking for is to meet those limits and once you do then there's no more learning and sometimes there's no learning at all.
