“Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!” This was a quote that was on the back page of three sheets of paper with a few rules and course description that was given to the 15 people who came to take on the Ironman challenge. The Ironman was a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at endurance swim, running, and biking events. Judy and John Collins came up with the idea to combine the three toughest endurance races into one event (Ironman). Sebastian Kienle, an ironman finisher, once said, “Your body drives you to the finish line, but your mind makes you cross it.” Around 35 years ago in 1978, the first ironman was held. For some people it is their job, but for others it is for fun. A lot of people hire trainers to help prepare them. Oftentimes, When people have a job and a family, but also have to train, they train less during the weekend and spend time with their family during the weekends. Some people save their long runs for the weekends to do early in the mornings or during a time where it isn’t taking up time to hang out with their family. If it is one’s job it is much easier. Each year it builds on itself. The more one does it, the easier it is. If one has been working out for a while it is much easier to get back into shape due to the muscle memory, because one has many years of experience for working out. Many people look at all the older men and women still running marathons and competing in ironmans. They are able to do this because they have worked out for such a long time that they are in such good shape to train again. Being a coach helps one motivate others. By doing the workouts with whoever the coach is coaching, it helps because the coach knows how their feeling rather than just watching them do it. Coaching athletes to train for an Ironman requires attention to physical, mental, and chemical aspects of the body. The elite athletes normally have more time to rest during off season rather than an age group athlete, because they are more prepared (Splinder). It is important to start training early. Around six months before it is good to start getting into good training habits and finding out what one’s strength and weaknesses are. It is important to be careful because one can burn out. Training for an Ironman takes a lot of time out of one’s life and it is important to be aware of that
