Although it is not only about the Irish traditional music, but it is also about the folk, rock, punk and other genres of music in Ireland. Irish music is so important to our culture because Irish songs tell a story through songs and make them more appealing to the listeners.3 Some poplar instruments in Ireland are the harp, flute, tin whistle, fiddle, uilleann pipes, and bodhrán (Irish drum).1 The most popular musical instrument in Ireland is the harp. The harp, an ancient folk instrument, has a beautiful delicate sound when played. Harps are popular all around the world and relate back to the ancient Irish history and folklore tales of mystical stories. Harps today are not a rare instrument in Ireland as they are the national symbol.
The numerous compositions by Grainger are all influenced by folk songs he recorded, transcribed and arranged for many different choral and instrumental ensembles. “Oh Danny Boy” is a cornerstone of Irish tradition as a folk tune that originated from a song known as “London Derry Air”. There are many different opinions of the exact origin of the folk tune; however the most concrete evidence tells us that Irish Tune from County Derry was taken from the Complete Petrie Collection of the Music of Ireland edited by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Irish Tune is technically simple; there are no difficult rhythms to hinder the success of the performance of the tune. The difficulty of Irish Tune lies within the harmonic tuning, extreme ranges, balance of melody and harmony lines and precision.

Every summer, Clare has the Doolin Folk Festival, and in Dublin, the Frank Harte Festival. Today, there is an increase in the imagination, innocvation, and collaboration of musicians. For example, The Gloaming is an Irish music group founded by fiddler Martin Hays and singer and musician Iarla O Lionaird. While The Gloaming play traditional Irish music, keeping in tune with the sound and structure of it, the band brings in a fresh sound and makes music out of poems. The connected world has led to an increase opportunities for traidititional Irish music, and it is the continuous playing of the accordion, uilleann pipes, fiddler, the collaboration of musicians, and the heart of the players that allows traditional Irish music to stay alive.
It began as an oral tradition, as many forms of traditional music do, and unaccompanied vocal songs were called sean nós and described as being “highly ornamental where the voice is placed at the top of the range” (“Irish Traditional Music”, Wikipedia). In many cases, the melody is varied in each verse. There were also Caoineadh songs, which is Irish for a lament. This type of song is about sorrow and pain and were originally thought to be sung (for money) at funerals. “Oh, Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling”1 leaves not a single Irish eye dry once the melody has begun to play. Despite the fact that “Danny Boy” was written in 1910 by the English lawyer, Frederick Edward Weatherly, this folk ballad has become one of Ireland’s most treasured songs. The song’s longevity is due not only to the haunting melody, but also to the expertly penned lyrics which express the longing for a loved one gone away. These lyrics have been morphed and changed to fit each generation, starting from those who remember losing loved ones in the Irish Diaspora to present day family members of lost and beloved IRA soldiers. Though “Danny Boy” is as familiar to the Irish as their orange, green, and white flag, most people do not know the origins of the popular song.

Johann Sebastian Bach was, is, and will forever be one of the most infamous and genius contributors to the world of Baroque music. His work in defining the various styles within the Baroque genres and composing has had a very pervading impact. As a pianist who has been studying classical music for over fourteen years, I, along with countless others, would certainly say that Bach holds a very highly regarded reputation as a composer. Bach took a step in the Baroque genre when he separated the sections of the toccata in a different way than most. The pieces of his toccati were represented in pairs of other pieces.
