Involvement in Bullying Creates Unsuccessful Adults
Bullying is a very serious matter. There are 2,200 suicides per year caused by bullying (“Bullying and Suicide”). Bullying is intentionally trying to make a person’s life worse whether it is from the internet, physical contact, or harsh words. There is a difference between joking with friends and picking on someone who is not their friend, attempting to make them hate their life. Not only is bullying harmful to the one being bullied, but it is also harmful to the bully and especially to the students who are both bullied and bully others. Those who decide to live through the bullying encounter severe effects from it later in life. Children bullied in school grow up to have physical and mental ailments, unhealthy lifestyle habits, and struggle with jobs and have financial problems.
Children who are involved in bullying grow up to have physical and mental ailments. Many develop severe psychological symptoms once they grow up. They have an increased risk in suicide, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, and panic attacks (Pappas). Also, victims of bullying have reported frequent sadness, fearfulness, worriness, and nervousness (Sansone). “Bully/victims are at a five times greater risk of depression than uninvolved kids, as well as 10 times the likelihood of suicidal thoughts or actions and 15 times the likelihood of developing a panic disorder” (Pappas). This proves that being involved in bullying causes a greater chance of developing psychological symptoms. Also, several of the children grow up to have somatic symptoms. Bullying has become associated with depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. It has been found that victims of bullying are often left in a depressed state, causing suicidal thoughts and potential actions. Teens see that the pain they are feeling can go away with suicide, and the idea remains in their head (Litwiller & Brausch). According to the Center For Disease Control, victims of bullying have sleep difficulties, causing them to have problems in school. These kids are also more vulnerable to stomach aches and headaches due to the anxiety that comes from bullying ("Bullying Suicide
Bullying has evolved into a monster with many heads. There are many different types of bullying “traditional bullying is any type of bullying that is carried out through non-electronic means” (Differences between Cyberbullying and Traditional Bullying). Examples of non-electronic bullying are verbal, physical, and social bullying. Traditional bullying is what most parents think of when bullying is proposed. The one question that is usually asked is why? There are many reason why bullying may occur. “Bullies may have underlying psychological factors that contribute to their aggressive behavior or impair their ability to interpret social interactions” (Bullying at School). Bullying can cause another person long or short term problems throughout their whole life. Bullies are also likely to have problems throughout life, such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and spouse abuse. Bullying is not only wrong, but inhumane.
“A young man committed suicides because of all the people that bullied him… his parents are devastated,” is what you hear on your news channel. Parents are losing teens every day because of bullying. Bullying is an unwanted aggressive behavior that is repeated over time (www.stopbullying.gov ). Just imagine feeling left out and depressed because of someone’s attitude towards you. Bullying is so serious that teens feel unwanted and get suicidal thoughts. At their age they should be enjoying themselves and getting ready for the future. When they get bullied it brings negative effects on their lives. Most of us think bullying isn’t a big deal unless it affects us or someone around us that we know. We should take it very serious because it can happen to anyone; but we can all help prevent bullying if we help each other. Parents, teachers, staff members, and students can all get involved and help stop bullying .We all have a role to play towards bullying and how it affects our teenagers.
Bullying in school arises as a global issue, and people are becoming more aware of its essence and its consequences. Going to school should be like a second home, a safe, compliant place, but for some student, school can be a social nightmare. Some may view bullying as a harmless act, but it is in fact a dangerous act. Students that have been bullied tend to be emotionally unstable, depressed, loss of interest in school and they have a higher risk of becoming drug addicts and school dropout. Bullying does not only affect the person being bullied, but also the bully himself. Persons who are bullies are usually the ones with the most problems and they use bullying as a mask to hide all their problems. In November of 2012, a 14 year old girl committed suicide in Canada after receiving numerous threats from 2 of her classmates because of a “falling out” in the girls' relationship. This past year, a freshman at Rutgers University took his own life after a video revealing his true sexuality was discovered and put onto a commonly known website for all the university to see. The well known “Columbine Shootings” shocked the world because the shooters were said to have been picked on and bullied in school. The effects of bullying, even in one’s childhood, can haunt them forever: “Sometimes, a whisper in an elementary school classroom can echo for decades. A threat called out in a middle school hallway can cling to the subconscious into adulthood. And an insecurity exploited in a high school cafeteria can redefine a future” (Johnson 1). It’s clearly obvious that bullying can take lives and torture the people whom loved the victims of such cruelty. People, not just kids and teenagers, but people are bullied everyday across the world.
Bullying is a growing concern in a society where status and exercising power over another human being are increasingly important in developing one’s social circles. Dan Olweus (Norwegian researcher and founder of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program) defines it as an “aggressive behaviour that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power. Most often, it is repeated over time” (Violencepreventionworks.org). School victimization is an especially delicate matter that has only really been in the public eye for the past half century, as more and more researchers and psychologists pointed out its short- and long-term negative effects on targeted individuals. It has since been widely investigated and numerous programs have been developed in an effort to address and prevent the many forms of bullying that exist today. The negative effects of such an abusive behaviour are various and can greatly differ from individual to individual. However, there are three main consequences that can be associated with school bullying, which are: school avoidance, depression/anxiety and even suicidal attempts.
Bullying is a serious issue and has an adverse effect that could lead to depression, anxiety, and worse suicide. To become a bully takes a long process, with the help from parents, schools, communities, and social media, bullies and bullying can be prevented.
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
Bullying is a very immoral behavior which leads to emotional and self-esteem issues to the target and in extreme or persistent cases it has been found to lead to suicide. The bullies should be well punished and counseled to stop the behavior.
Too many adults seem to think that bullying is just part of being a kid, but it isn’t, and it has a negative and sometimes long lasting effect on others. Bullying Statistics show that “Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.” What some people do not realize is that there are many different types of bullying that include physical bullying, emotional bullying, sexting, and cyberbullying. There are many warning signs of suicide. Depression, interest in death or dying, engaging in harmful activities (e.g. substance abuse, reckless behavior, and self-injury), giving away personal possessions, saying goodbye to people, and making comments about how life would be better off without them. Bullying is a serious problem in our society today. There are many examples in the world, either in direct contact or through social network to harass peers. Bullying can leave many different effects on child’s development, and adulthood as well. Bullying not only affect physical health, it also can affect mental health. The effects bullying can have on its victims is something that may last throughout their lives, or something that may end their life. Violence can be psychological, economic, physical, and sexual. An estimated amount of 160,000 students across the United States misses school each day due to being a victim of bullying. From a present study, 29% of students involved in bullying, 14% of the children were said to be victims, 7% were bullies, and 8% were bullies and victims. The worst type of social behavior stems from bullying, and leads to complications in a student’s future. Have you ever been personally bullied by another person? Maybe you have not had your head forced into a locker, but verbally hurt? Bullying today can be quite serious. Bullying is when someone tries to hurt another person by hitting them or by simply hurting them with their words. Bullying is something that can have a huge impact on its victims. It might be something that lasts throughout their lives, or something that might cause them to take their lives. Bullies make small groups so that they can pick on other students who are small, fragile, and who can not defend themselves. Picking on someone should not be accepted because it can affect a person's well being in a drastic way. Bullying is believed to be a normal part of school life. However, when people begin to have that mentality they forget that bullying is psychologically and physically harmful to both the victim and the bully.
Bullying is a devastating issue that threatens the well-being of today’s youth. Those who are most likely at risk are those who; have a learning or physical disability i.g., autism or ADHD, are underweight or overweight, are gay/lesbian/transgendered, or speak a different language. Of course, there are no specific guidelines of who will become victims of bullying. Children who are bullied experience lower self-esteem, greater loneliness, greater anxiety, and more depression in addition to the already stressful adolescent years. The longer the bullying occurs the more profound the symptoms can become. As a low-level, subtle form of violence, bullying creates an unsafe school environment and can lead to more serious types of violence among students (Whitted & Dupper, 2005).
