Investigation of How Temperature Affects the Rate of Reaction of Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid

I am going to investigate how temperature affects the rate of the

reaction of sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid.

WORD EQUATION

Sodium thiosulphate

+

Hydrochloric acid

SO2

The temperature of the sodium thiosulphate will be changed by heating

the solution to a known temperature.

The concentration of the acid remains unchanged.

I am going to do one experiment, changing the temperature of the

sodium thiosulphate. This is how they will be done.

(Fig.1a)

·Heat Sodium thiosulphate in electric water bath to desired

temperature

·Pour 50 cm3 of Sodium thiosulphate into a beaker then put on the

paper with a cross

·Pour 5cm3 of hydrochloric acid in to a cylinder

·Pour hydrochloric acid into the beaker with the sodium thiosulphate

·As soon as the two substances are mixed together, the stopwatch will

start timing and it will stop when the cross is obscured

·Record results

·Wash out the flask thoroughly

·Repeat experiment again for 2nd results

·Then repeat using a different temperature until all temperatures have

been completed

Equipment apparatus:

Sulphur dioxide

Produced in this reaction is toxic by inhalation.

Students suffering from asthma need to take care.

Hydrochloric acid

Corrosive

May also cause burns

Also an irritant.

·Sodium thiosulphate (Na S O) of concentration 1.5 m (concentration

will be fixed)

·Hydrochloric acid (HCl) of concentration 2m (concentration will be

fixed)

paper marked with a cross

·Measuring cylinder (x2)
