Investigating the Reasons Why the Major Cities of Britian Were Bombed by Germany in 1940 There were many reasons why Germany bombed Britain and unlike WW1, the use of air power was essential to both sides during WW2. Fighter planes had now become central to modern warfare, and the country that had the finest air force would ultimately decide who would succeed in WW2. During WW2, Britain had one of the finest Navy's and air forces in the world, and intended to keep it that way, as without these important war aspects they were defenceless due as it is an island. So Germany needed a solution to this problem so that their invasion of Britain would be a success. Their answer to this was "Operation Sea Lion", which was a sequenced plan that would assist to Britain's invasion by destroying the RAF. The first stage of this operation was to gain air control by destroy the RAF so that Britain would be unable to protect its valuable Navy. Secondly Germany was to destroy the British Navy and also protect their own Navy by using the German Luftwaffe. Finally the invasion of Britain would commence, as the Luftwaffe was to support ground troops and their Navy, by going ahead and destroying the enemy bases, thus preventing Britain from organising defence. However Operation Sea Lion went a completely different way than the Germans had anticipated. As the first stage proceeded during June 1940, the Luftwaffe started to attack the RAF but Britain put up stiff opposition to what became known as "The Battle of Britain". By September 1940 it was clear that the Luftwaffe would not be able to destroy the RAF due to the inventions of the radar, radio control and the development of planes such as the Spitfire, which was a lighter, faster, and a more superior fighter plane. Then, a lost German bomber accidentally bombed Central London and in retaliation the RAF destroyed vast amounts of Berlin.
