Investigating Surfaces for Insulating Boiling Water in a Flask
Aim
I'm investigating which surface (matt black or silvery) is best at
insulating boiling water. I will investigate this by covering two
equally sized conical flasks in different materials; one in matt black
and one in silvery. After that I will fill each of the flasks with an
equal amount of boiling water. At regular intervals of 1 minute I will
measure the drop in water temperature in each flask.
Prediction
I predict that the flask with the silvery surface will take longer to
cool and overall there will be a smaller drop in temperature because
the silver surface will reflect nearly all heat radiation back into
the flask keeping the water warm whilst a dull black surface is a very
good emitter of heat radiation so a lot of heat will be lost to the
surroundings.

Apparatus
---------
* Conical flasks
----------------
-One silver foil
-One matt black
* 2 Thermometers
* Cotton wool
* Stopwatch
* 400cm³ Boiling Water *
* Measuring jug
For the experiment, firstly get 2 equally sized conical flasks. Then
cover one of the flasks in matt black and one in silvery foil.
Secondly, boil 400cm³ (*possibly more as water can evaporate) of water
and put exactly 200cm³ in each flask. Then put a thermometer in each
of the conical flasks, and fill the top with cotton wool; this is to
insulate the flask thoroughly and stop water evaporating through the
top part of the flask. The thermometers have to be left to settle
before taking the first reading at zero minutes. After that at 1minute
intervals, read each thermometer and record the temperature. Repeat
this 3 times, so the test is fair and more precise. Afterwards, work
out the average for each reading. For Safety hand gloves should be
worn for handling hot water. Also make sure that the flasks containing

Our product of interest we chose to market is Hydro Flasks, which is a stainless steel, vacuum insulated, double walled water bottle that is covered under lifetime warranty. This product will withstand consumer needs because not only do Hydro Flasks exceed the task of keeping beverages cold and or hot for 24 hours, but they provide customers the opportunity to do it in a fun and colorful way. Hydro Flasks come in fourteen different colors, while also varying in different sizes. Pricing on these water bottles range anywhere from $29.95- $59.95, which may also vary dependent on if you choose to customize it or even purchase different lids. Although Hydro Flasks are ranked on the pricier side, it is worth the risk in order to avoid lukewarm water. Hydro Flasks are a widely known brand, but rarely do you ever see commercials for it. This brand is mostly promoted by the consumers themselves, in a sense that everywhere you go someone is carrying around a Hydro Flask thus promoting product and making others aware of this widely known brand. Hydro Flasks can be found worldwide anywhere from Nordstrom, Hydro Flask website, Amazon,

As the pressure drop increases in the column, it is observed that the degree of foaming becomes more violent and more spread out. When the pressure drop is relatively high, it means that the pressure exerted by the vapour is insufficient to hold up the liquid in the tray, causing the gas bubbles to appear on top of the sieve trays. To add on, the higher the pressure drop, the higher the velocity of the vapour passing up the column. As a result, more vapour will penetrate the liquid and more bubbles formation is observed. Due to more bubbles formation, the degree of foaming are more agitated, rapid and spread out.
First of all, the purpose of this lab was to determine the water’s vapor pressure at different temperatures as well as to measure the molar heat of vaporization of water using the Clausias Clapeyron equation. The first concept out of many represented in this lab is the ideal gas law. The ideal gas law is used to get the number of moles of air trapped in the 10 mL graduated cylinder. Once we cooled the system so that water vapor is extremely minute, and then we determined the number of moles of air using the ideal gas law. The number of moles of air equals to the pressure (in atm) times volume divided by constant times temperature. One would assume that when the water is heated to 80 degrees, the number of air molecules in the air bubble would decrease, but it actually stays constant. This is due to the fact that there is no air coming in or out of the cylinder. As the temperature gets closer to 80 degrees, the number of air molecules stays the same but the water vapor increases. And the bubble expands to keep the pressure at the same level. The ideal gas law was also used when the partial pressure of air in the gas mixture is calculated. This is gotten from number of moles multiplied by the constant and the constant and the whole thing divided by the volume.

Three types of heat transfers help solar cookers use the sun’s energy to cook food. Heat is always transferred from the warmer object to the cooler object. Heat is also transferred to and through some materials better than others. The three types of heat transfers are radiation, conduction, and convection. Convection is the heat transfer by movement through materials such as air or a liquid. Materials like these are called mediums. Convection is the primary way heat can be transferred through liquids and gases. To classify a heat transfer as convection, hot air has to rise up to equally heat the air around it. Box solar cookers have to retain this hot air to cook food, so the cookers have to have lids with a transparent covering. The transparent covering shuts in all of the hot air and keeps out the cool air. The second heat transfer is the transfer of heat between two objects, or substances, that are directly in contact with each other. This heat transfer, called conduction is the primary way heat can be transferred through solids. In gases and liquids, conduction works poorly because the atoms have a great deal of space between them. Since they have a lot of space between each other, they can’t communicate heat to one another. The solid, aluminum foil, is commonly used in homemade solar ovens because it is a metal. It is well known metal is a great conductor of heat. Since metal (aluminum) is a great conductor of heat, whatever comes in contact with it will gradually absorb the heat from the metal. The third type of heat transfer is radiation. Radiation is the transfer of energy (heat) through space by electromagnetic waves. Solar energy reaches Earth by radiation (Pearson 485). When an energy wave comes directly in contact with...

The AEG Electric tea kettle was a industrial invention made by Peter Behrns in Berlin Germany in the year of 1909. The Kettle was labeled as an industrial invention because it was made during the industrial revolution time era, this time era had a specific style, which gave artifacts specific standards. One of which were the materials used, another was design, and technology. According to collections.com, the kettle was made out of Brass and wicker material. These materials were used most often in the industrial time era because it was most avalible, easy to mass-produce and gave a futuristic design style (collections .par 2). Another significant industrial standard was design, Berhs created three different design styles for this speficic artifact.

A Stirling engine is used for some of these systems to generate electricity. With these receiver focal points, temperatures can reach higher than 100°C. At this temperature, energy created is efficient.
