The Industrial revolution was a time of drastic change marked by the general introduction of power-driven machinery. This change generally helped life, but it had its disadvantages as well. Pollution, such as Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere rose, working conditions declined, and the number of women and children working increased. The government, the arts, literature, music, architecture and man's way of looking at life all changed during this period. Two revolutions took place.

This quote by Stephen Gardiner pretty much summarizes a long, laborious period of time into a single 15-word quote. Urbanization, industrialization, and contamination, all formed part of this significant period of time in European history. Nevertheless, one aspect that better symbolized the Industrial Revolution was the sudden surge of new inventions and machinery that begun during the Industrial Revolution. Among the numerous inventions that appeared during the Industrial Revolution, the spinning jenny, the steam locomotive, and the steam engine were three of the most remarkable. The spinning jenny, steam locomotive, and steam engine were inventions that greatly enhanced all types of industries in the Industrial Revolution.
The Second Industrial Revolution affected the North, South, West, and Midwest with changes such as population, transportation, and economy changes. The rapid growth of the manufacturing economy in each region created a need for workers attracting many immigrants. By 1870 about 15 percent of the U.S. population was foreign born and, about one of every five industrial workers was an immigrant. In addition, each region also developed and improved their transportation system, usually, by railroads. Many inventors invented items to make going through life during this time much easier, technology improved,their were many changes in society, and working conditions improved shortly after.
Each of the regions in the United States were affected differently by the Second Industrial Revolution. Places like the Midwest were growing rapidly. They had a huge increase in population thanks to mass immigration and their economy was doing well. The Midwest was a central location making it even more popular. Places like Chicago was becoming a transportation hub and one of the largest cities. Another region that was doing fairly well was the North. They were leading in manufacturing, similar to the first Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution in Britain’s history is marked as the period of great development that led to the modern era of growth, improved living standards and technology. Moreover, this revolution was not just limited to Britain; it affected the rest of Europe and America in the same positive manner. Due to the Industrial Revolution’s success in many countries, it is now commonly cited as the surest way for a country to develop. In economics, goals of a developed country are high production of goods, high Gross Domestic Product (GDP), low unemployment and sustained growth; during an Industrial Revolution all these are achieved. However, despite the main goal of IR to improve living standards for the population, the actual success when weighed against the social cost is debatable. It is accepted that IR improved the living standards of many; it created a new class, which Marx called the “bourgeoisie”, who had control over wealth, decisions and helped improve the lives of many others. However, many historians view this new class as “rapacious landlords and conscienceless capitalist[s]” [9] who exploited the working class for their own benefit. For a majority of “the working class… ‘Industrial Revolution’ … must have appeared… as a gigantic and cruel experiment, which, insofar as it was affecting their house, their health, their subsistence and their pleasure, was proving a calamitous failure” [9]. Therefore, this group will be examined to determine more general effects of IR on the society.
The Industrial Revolution was the major advancement of technology in the late 18th and early 19th century that began in Britain and spread to America.The national and federal government helped the United States grow into a self reliant nation with improvements in transportation, technology, manufacturing and the growth of the population.
The industrial revolution has been a part of the rapid progress of the society that affects living situation, productivity and technology. The first industrial revolution involved the introduction of water and steam power to mechanize production. The second industrial revolution harnessed electric power to facilitate mass production, leading to the development of the internal combustion engine such as the aeroplane and moving pictures. The third industrial revolution, in the 1960s, used electronics and information technology to automate the same production, giving rise to digital technologies such as computers and internet. As of now, the fourth industrial revolution have started to rise.
The Theme of our Almanac is Science and Technology so my Historical Analysis will be based off of the Science and Technology of the Industrial Revolution. My historical analysis will be about the inventions during the Industrial Revolution. The three I will be focusing on: The Water Frame, The Improved Steam Engine and the Sewing Machine. All three of those inventions all offer some sort of Problem, Progress and Promise to the Industrial Revolution. I will be analyzing those three things.
As one of the greatest times of production and change in the quality of life for all classes and members of society, the Industrial Revolution marked a turning point for humankind. Together, the industrial revolutions in both America and Britain not only altered the lifestyles of many, but also offered solutions to many questions that had plagued society for numerous years. Changes that occurred in the fields of medicine and chemistry still play a role in our everyday lives. These advancements not only affected 19th century industry, but also began paving the way for modern technology.
