On the interview day I had with Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM), I had the pleasure of speaking with a student who received a dual degree in MD and MA in Urban Bioethics. I saw the brochure and thought it was very interesting, and he was able to expound about his opinion of the program and elaborating on his project involving the local community. I was interested in the program from the information but was not able to commit to applying due to the unknown workload of the school curriculum. As time, went on I was fortunate to attend the PREP program where I heard more about the degree from Nora Jones, and was able to speak to a current M2 about his experience. It made me wonder why black people are being killed. In most of these situations, I did not believe the victim posed as a threat. So then I started to question a lot more and discovered a lot of disheartening information, especially in the health field. I discovered that in many poor urban cities, housed by black and Hispanic people, have high lead levels in their water that can affect brain development among other effects. I discovered that higher education institutions used Black Americans, and Central Americans as guinea pigs without warning, care for life or compensation. I learned that the local education system is only as valuable as the cost of the property in the area. I discovered that unhealthy diets are propagated in poor neighborhoods because there is an abundance of fast food restaurants and lack of grocery stores, and healthy food cost too much. Lastly, even in a small sample of medical students, there were students who believed black people have higher pain tolerance and would be less likely to receive pain medication than their white counterparts.
