Ethnicity/In today’s world, society already has a judgement against most races, genders and sexualitys. Nothing in society is good enough for anyone there is so much intersectionality in this world it is actually very scary growing up in these times. There is discrimination everywhere, it doesn’t only have to be about racism. There is discrimination against the disabled, gender, and race it almost seems that this topic is “the norm” only because intersectionality and oppression have been around since the beginning of time. In the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, the narrator’s view of women is generally pessimistic. His negative view of women is also reflected by women, specifically of Caucasian ethnicity. Their societal depiction of black men considers them to be hypersexual objects and incapable of anything else. Emma, Brother Hubert’s wife, and Sybil, are three women in particular who possess negative character flaws that allow the narrator to deem them unworthy. Emma’s tremendous dominance give the impression of being unapproachable while Brother Hubert’s wife’s infidelity and ability to control confuses him and finally, Sybil’s decadence makes her appear sloppy. All of these flaws are used to reduce the narrator to a sexual tool at the expense of his intellect.
In sociology, the LGBT community is viewed as a subculture to the dominant world culture. The community is generally accepted by the dominant culture and although the group has some of its own beliefs and rituals/traditions, it still adheres to the fundamental beliefs and cultural expectations of the dominant culture. Before being considered a subculture, homosexual relationships and variations of sexual orientation were classified as devian behaviort. Throughout history, as far back as one could remember, African- American men have been racially profiled and stereotyped by various individuals. It has been noted that simply because of their skin color, individuals within society begin to seem frightened when in their presence.In Black Men and Public Space, Brent Staples goes into elaborate detail regarding the stereotypical treatment he began to receive as a young man attending University of Chicago. He begins to explain incidents that took place numerous times in his life and assists the reader is seeing this hatred from his point of view. People discriminate against other people now in generation to. It just isn’t specific people; it’s anyone who they can take advantage of. The kid that is shy, the new kid, the kid that is an artist, the kid who is getting hurt at home and anyone else they can hurt. People have killed themselves and injured themselves because those people that hurt them make them feel so bad they can’t take it anymore and just loose it all. Nobody should be bullied, but people don’t even realize they are doing it sometimes, and it goes too far.
In the closing statements of John D’Emilio’s article Capitalism and Gay Identity, he posits “that the relationship between capitalism and family is fundamentally contradictory. One the one hand, capitalism continually weakens the material foundation of family life… On the other, it needs to push men and women into families … The elevation of the family to ideological preeminence guarantees that capitalist society will reproduce not just children, but heterosexism and homophobia” (474).
Racism still exists today in this day and age. African American men are particularly stereotyped to be drug dealers, criminals, and gangsters. People have there on opinion about black men, if someone is sitting in their car, and a black man walks by they’re going to lock their door, because they’re scared there going to get robed. In the world of sociology and the studies of human interaction, the term intersectionality has been defined as, “the idea that various biological, social, and cultural categories – including gender, race, class, and ethnicity – interact and contribute towards systematic social inequality” (“Definition of Intersectionality – Sociology”). However, as Dr. White defined the term on the Spring 2014 Final Writing Assignment sheet, these categories that make up one’s identity can “intersect or interact in ways that can either advantage or disadvantage the person’s well-being and development” (White). In regards to the text, David M. Newman’s Identities & Inequalities: Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality, Newman progressively explores the concept of intersectionality throughout the entirety of the text, but he does not ever actually define the term itself. Although an exact, clear-cut definition of the term “intersectionality” has not been officially established, the concept of the term is fairly simple to understand. Every person has different social identities that they carry to their name. Intersectionality is simply an analysis of how those different identities play off of each other and how they affect the person they are describing.

Traditionally, members of our society feel most comfortable when they’re able to categorize people into boxes based on their identity. People use these unrealistically small boxes to divide up every person they meet between man or woman, rich or poor, and White/Black/Hispanic/Asian etc. Regardless of a person’s desire to participate or not, society will include them in this system of division. Although race, class, and gender are all components in my identity, I, personally, view gender as the most influential.

When we allow this shadow of societal norms to dictate our choices and actions, we internalize all of the rules of society that work against us. From racism to sexism to homophobia to everything in between, these shadows haunt us to the point where they become a part of us, and we allow them to run our lives out of fear of what will happen if we don’t. This is called internalized discrimination. So first, let’s face our shadows head-on as we find the roots of this self imposed oppression, and then we’ll hide under our covers as we look at the effects, until finally, we leave our shadows in the dark with our solutions.
I liked the topic of Discrimination from Chapter 2 because I experienced these kind of treatment from other people’s and my personal experience. Even though the United State is a very open-minded country, some group of people still are experiencing mistreatment from discrimination both from their work and daily life.
