In today’s world, there are many interracial relationships whether that be dating or marriage. However, when looking around from an outsider, there still seems to be a tendency for people to choose their own ethnicity. The main idea behind this research is depending on the level of commitment in a relationship, will that change a person’s preference on ethnicity in their partner? Predictions about attractiveness, dating, and marriage are made in order to see if this phenomenon exist or not. From here, our hypothesis was formed that the longer the commitment, the more likely someone is to choose a partner of their same ethnicity. Attractiveness is the least commitment, as it is just how one views a certain race in general. Our hypothesis is that for attractiveness, people will rate other ethnicities high on attractiveness and not just their own ethnicity. The next article helps to support our hypothesis as it is based on attractive in own-race preference (Burke, Nolan, Hayward, Russell, & Sulikowski, 2013). This article takes a continuation from the previous article as it makes a statement about assortative mating and ties it into how interracial relationships and marriages are still quite rare. The researchers state the reason for this could be because people find their own race more attractive than others. However, the results did not show a strong correlation in own-race preference in attractiveness (Burke et al., 2013). From the results, it helps supports our hypothesis that the more commitment there is, the more likely a person will choose their own race. For our experiment, attractiveness is being used in a general sense rather a physical. Since this article talks only about attractiveness and the results show there was no strong correlation towards their own race, it starts to help support our hypothesis. The second and third level for commitment is dating and marriage. Our hypothesis is that compared to attractiveness and dating, when it comes to marriage, people will choose their own ethnicity.
