Sen’s, the character Mrs. Sen’s suffers from the separation of her culture and the isolation of a community. In the beginning of the story, Mrs. Sen’s experiences conflict between her and her husband because of her lack of interest in driving, “Why don’t you drive today? Mr. Sen asked when he appeared, rapping on the hood of the car with his knuckles. They always spoke to each other in English when Eliot was present. Not today. Another day. How do you expect to pass the test if you refuse to drive on a road with other cars? Eliot is here today. He is here every day. It’s for your own good. Eliot, tell Mrs. Sen it’s for her own good. She refused” (126). Mrs. Sen’s is stepping out of her comfort zone by driving alone. In India, she would not need to learn how to drive. This is something very different between Western and Eastern culture. Individualism has contrasts in India than western culture. In the short story, Mrs. Sen's tells Eliot that in India all anyone would have to do to get someone’s attention is shout and that in America, screaming would just bring complaints, “At home that is all you have to do. Not everybody has a telephone . But just raise your voice a bit, or express grief or joy of any kind, and the whole neighborhood and half of another has come to share the news, to help with arrangements” (116). Mrs. Sen’s feels as if she’s alone without her husband and feels anxiety being in a new culture and environment. But, Eliot also spends most of his time alone as his mother works and his father isn’t around his family anymore. Though Stephen initially feels isolated both physically and psychologically due to his illness, through the calm beauty of Matsu’s garden and the comfort Sachi provides, Stephen finds his stay at Tarumi to be much less secluded. This proves that though one may feel alone at times, other people or things may help vanquish that feeling. In today’s world, isolation is everywhere – it is seen through due disease, intelligence, race, etc. Yet, people find that little things like human comfort, such as Sachi, or object reminiscent happiness, like Matsu’s garden, are enough help them realize they are not alone. This sense of aid shows that like the flower in the midst of the desolate landscape, something small is all it takes to erase negative feelings.

The Kite Runner is the first novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. The novel is about a Pashtun fellow, Amir, who realizes his childhood mistakes and begins a journey to emend them. Hosseini commenced inditing the novel in 2001 while practicing medicine (source). Therefore, his cognizance regarding health care is limpidly reflected in the novel by his writing style, and the conflicts in the lives of characters. Mrs. Sen was forced to face the reality that she was no longer in India and her life was completely different from how it used to be whenever she was on the driver seat. It was something she did not need to do in India, she used to have a chauffeur to fetch her around in India. So, Mrs. Sen tried her best to avoid driving by coming up with lots of excuses. The main character is Mrs. Das whom is flirtatious, careless, and needy. She and her husband take their family to see the country India for the first time. The tour guide Mr.Kapsi whom is curious, understanding, and quite aware. He sees something unusual at the beginning of the trip, but does not say anything. As the children continue their site seeing, the husband takes picture with his camera as if he lost in his own world. Meanwhile the wife gets to know the driver instead of site seeing. Mr.Kapsi is aware that the family is not like most Indians which lead him to be attracted to Mrs.Das. It states, “The family looked Indian but dressed as foreigners did, the children in stiff, brightly colored clothing and caps with translucent visors (29). Throughout the novel, Gogol has been struggling with his name. From kindergarten to college, Gogol has questioned the reason why he was called Nikhil when he was a child, to the reason why he was called Gogol when he was in college. Having a Russian name, Gogol often encounters questions from people around him, asking the reason of his name. Gogol was not given an Indian name from his Indian family or an American name from the fact that he was born in America, to emphasize that how hard an individual try to assimilate into a different culture, he is still bonded to his roots as the person he ethnically is.
It’s pretty clear that film and literature are very different mediums and when you try to make one into the other, such as an adaptation, you’re going to have some things that are lost in translation and seen in a different light. When an original work is made into a movie, I think they’re kind of at a disadvantage because they only have a few hours to get the whole story across while also keeping the viewer intrigued by what is taking place on the screen right in front of their eyes. Movies are able to contain special effects, visuals, and music though which can impact a viewer and make a scene stay in their mind longer which is a plus side to being able to view something. Literature on the other hand, has a greater advantage. They can keep the reader entertained for a considerably long time and you’re able to get more information about people and events such as what a character is thinking or what is happening behind the scenes during a specific event. I understand that people are going to have different opinions when it comes to whether a book or film adaptation of a work is the best and it is not always going to be the same for each and every piece of work. One thing I think though, is that The Namesake in both the film and the movie, they’re both accurate and concise in the way that they relate to one another.

The poem “Minority” written by Imtiaz Dharker uses contrasts in imagery and a change in point of view in order to convey the “foreigner” (1) and the message to “you” (44). The opening line of the poem introduces its theme of separation and otherness. The poem begins “I was born a foreigner” (1) using the 1st person point of view to present a personal feeling that is internal. The first line of the poem leads to the fact that the speaker was born in a country different from their origin. After the first line the speaker in the poem seems to belong nowhere – “even in the place/planted with my relatives” (4-5) leading to believe that the speaker is “a foreigner everywhere” (3). The speaker’s choice of words makes us feel that no matter where the speaker goes she always seems to be separated. The speaker returns to the country of her parents and still continues to feel like a foreigner. The speaker in this situation feels displaced and victimized because she find themselves facing prejudice from the country she was born in as well as the country of her relatives and family. This stanza solely serves to single the speaker who can be concluded as the “foreigner” (1) out as a lone individual rather than a representation of an entire group. The speaker’s repetition of “foreigner” (3) throughout the poem emphasizes her isolation from her own family as well as “All kinds of places and groups” (9). The speaker tells us “I don’t fit” (13) where she is comparing herself to “food cooked in milk of coconut/where you expected ghee or cream” (15-16) or an “unexpected aftertaste/ of cardamom or neem” (17-18).
