“Chicago Fire” is a show on NBC that portrays the life of a firefighters and paramedics. The house has the Rescue Squad, Truck 51, and Ambulance 61. In the show there are plenty of examples of interpersonal communications working within the characters. Whether it be strained relationships, power hungry co-workers, or distressed victims of a fire, “Chicago Fire” shows interpersonal communications working to help understand situations, and solve problems. Through the last couple of weeks the show has been evolving as the beginning of season four is revealing more relationships, heros, and action. Immediately the fire house Chief Wallace Boden accepted Gabriela Dawson to be a cadet for Truck 51. Dawson is the first female firefighter at Firehouse 51, and not all of the guys were happy about it. Some of the men felt that she wasn’t strong enough or that she didn’t belong on a fire truck. Her sexual orientation, her characteristics which identified her as female did not go well with the guys. They thought that her place was still on Ambulance 61. This gave her a gender role, a set of expectations for appropriate behavior that a culture typically has assigned to an individual based on her biological sex. Though Dawson had finally got all of the discrimination away from her, Dawson recently lost a baby. The chief over all of the district fire departments saw this as a weakness, and tried his hardest not to let Dawson back in the Fire House. But Dawson did not let her perceived gender role stop her from getting back to work. Gender roles are seen very frequently in most parts of life today. But there is no reason to judge what somebody’s role is when one does not truly know a person. Also Gender roles can also become very stereotypical, which is a generalization of a certain groups that are applied to individuals. An example of a common stereotype is that Women are not as strong as men are. This stereotype was applied to Dawson, but it is not true, she is as strong as the men in the fire house. Steffen’s article, “Gender Stereotypes Stem From the Distribution of Women and Men Into Social Roles”. In this article, they discuss the root of gender stereotypes being derived from the unequal distribution of roles for men and women in society. They believe too many women are left to be “homemakers” while men become professionals. This is evident in Survivors as the show chooses to have Abby take on this maternal role. This unequal distribution of roles then, in turn, leads to men and women being labeled with certain qualities. According to Steffen and Eagly, women are believed to have communal qualities, or “manifested by selflessness, concern with others, and a desire to be at one with others”, and men agentic qualities or, “self-assertion, self-expansion, and the urge to master” (Eagly, Steffen 736). The passage “About Mem” by Gretel Ehrlich explains the stereotypes of men with the use of cowboys. Men and women play a different role in society but a concerning topic is the gender roles. Gender roles are behaviors that society expects of each sex and this limits the behavior to masculine and feminine. The first sign of gender roles is presented during a baby shower with the color baby blue for boys, and pink for girls. Gender roles have created a stereotype about what is considered masculine and feminine, but the problem is that when a child crosses the boarder the community will considered gay. Many things around us affect what is gender role, for example family, movies and friends. Many parents do not choose a gender for their child, because they want to wait.
Think of the most beautiful city in world. You are walking the streets, taking in the scenery in complete admiration of a city built by men. Then one day you go to sleep, a few hours later you awaken, and that beautiful city is completely destroyed. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was one of the largest disasters in American history (“The Great Chicago”). I will examine case studies by reputable scholars that reflect gender preference of the people in positions of power at work as well as the reasons why. I will also review scholarly journals that discuss the expectations of gender roles, and how women are shamed or stigmatized for succeeding at tasks that are generally assumed to me masculine. This section will offer an explanation as to why successful, career oriented; females in positions of power are still preferred to stay within traditional gender roles, whether it is in real life or reflected on television.

Alice Eagly’s social role theory focused on the different social roles that associate with different social groups such as men and women. With each gender there is a set of norms that correspond with sex. Males take the role of being masculine while females take more of a feminine role on society (Harrison and Lynch, 2005). If mean and woman don’t follow set gender norms they are outcaste and receive negative feedback from others. Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters, or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
On the other hand, women have proven that they can perform firefighting work, including nearly all of the physical work, as effectively as men. They have not disrupted the bonding and mutual dependence required for a firefighting unit to work effectively and professionally. While women have overcome these objections to prove that they could perform firefighting work, women nonetheless continue to face indirect forms of discrimination. While women may find it easier than men to get a job as a firefighter because of their higher test scores, they continue to face subtle forms of resentment and discrimination. As a result, discourages larger numbers of women from entering the field. This causes some to develop stress and give up on their desire to take firefighting up as a career.
