Position Paper #1 Ivette Medrano Araujo FMST 325 Ethics in Human Services Towson University In 2014 the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) approved a global definition of the social work profession, definition that states that “Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people […] and engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing.” A social worker is a person that will pursue a private practice career in order to serve and help others with their problems; however, it does not mean that the social worker will not face major challenges in their lives and in their professions. Sooner or later, the social worker will experience ethical dilemmas of different degrees that will lead him to research and analyze in a deep way different points of view in order to take a correct decision. In the case given, Teresa, a social worker in a small town in Iowa begins to face an ethical issue with a case she is handling. Her good friend, Evelyn, asks Teresa to take his teenage son, Chris, as her client. Chris is also Teresa’s son best friend, so she practically sees him all the time. Teresa cannot refuse to take Chris as her client because of the friendship that she has with his mother, Evelyn; however, it is said that Teresa has told Evelyn about her concern their friendship and the professional services that Teresa will provide. From that moment, Teresa is remembering the limits of a professional relationship. As a social worker, Teresa knows that “it is important that all socials workers recognize the ethical nature of the professional relationships... ... middle of paper ... ...ed. If Teresa follows the ethical principles of Service that states that “social workers draw on their knowledge, values and skills to help people in need to address social problems”, and the principle of Importance of Human Relationships “social workers understand that relationships between and among people are an important vehicle for change. Social workers engage people as partners in the helping process.” Objectivity can be present during this case. Teresa is a qualified and professional social workers, she is committed to help others regardless of who they are. Knowing her relationship with Chris and Evelyn, she can take advantage to perform a better job, but always following her ethical principles. Although, Teresa may see Chris outside her office, she needs to remain professional because she has a commitment with her profession and that cannot be broken.
