Not being involved with any outsourcing business, I experience the flatness of the world through online communities, media streaming, file and information sharing, e-mails and chatting, etc. Through social networking websites like Friendster, I can stay in touch with my distant friends and relatives. Instead of going to a mall, I can actually stay at home and shop online from anywhere around the world. And as a student who is usually bombarded with a lot of research work, I rely on search engines like Google and Yahoo, and on online encyclopedias, dictionaries and news articles. I don’t need to buy books or go through the hassle of searching books in a library and checking them out one by one for information and pictures anymore. Likewise, I don’t need to buy audio or video CD’s because I can download songs through LimeWire or watch a movie in YouTube. I can do all these things, yet all I need to pay for is my PLDT DSL connection and the only place I need to go to is in front of my computer.
The rapid changes in technology have made my life more comfortable. Compared to the people who lived a century before me, I can do more things with less effort exerted and less
money spent. I am indeed empowered as an individual through the internet. The things that only professionals and rich people can do or obtain before, anyone like me can do or obtain as well today. And as long as I have an internet access, I can never be too far from the other side of the globe, just like the call center employees Thomas Friedman talked about in his book, The World is Flat, thanks to the new technology brought to the Philippines.
Philippines is not a dominant player in what Friedman calls a flat world, but it is fast catching up. In recent years, it has become the destination of choice for outsourcing due to the large pool of trainable and highly skilled English-speaking labor force it offers, as well as the reduced cost of operations. Sykes Enterprises, Convergys Corp., Accenture, eTelecare, Caltex, Procter & Gamble, Barnes and Noble and American OnLine (AOL), among others, have built service centers in the Philippines . According to the Department of Trade and Industry, the revenue generated by the Philippine outsourcing industry grew from $3.5 billion in 2006 to $5 billion in 2007, and the outsourcing sector employees increased from 235,000 in 2006 to 320,000 in 2007 .
I feel that modern technology is making our lives easier by giving us breaks from civilization. Through the use of modern tools, we are able to complete tasks quicker, leaving more personal time. For example, the Internet allows students easy access to information for projects, term papers, and the like. Before, students had to spend more time in libraries and bookstores to find information that is now available from home in a matter of seconds. Modern technology is based on making life easier.
...all the pricey luxuries in life but at the cost of losing its priceless joys. The Internet has bred many unethical practices, like hacking, spamming and phishing. Internet crime is on the rise. The Internet, being an open platform lacks regulation. There is no regulation on the content displayed on websites. Internet gambling has become an addiction for many. Overexposure to the Internet has taken its toll. In this virtual world, you can be who you are not, you can be virtually living even after you die. Isn't this weird? Children are spending all their time playing online and less or almost no time playing on the ground. Youngsters are spending most of their time social networking, missing on the joys of real social life. Technology will enable diverse cultures to collaborate more efficiently, in every sphere. It will bring people and organizations together, closer
Due to the increasing competition in the global market place and more so in the local markets most companies are exploring the option of venturing oversees to market their goods. Various factors motivate such moves most of them being business sustainability oriented. Such firms are applying marketing principles in several countries. The firms are making single or several marketing mix decisions beyond state boundaries. Such moves at times involve establishing production bases in foreign countries and harmonizing marketing strategies all over the world. Some firms have penetrated the global market by either establishing partnerships in the foreign countries; merging with target country firms; or even by acquiring foreign based companies Nakra, 2006). Haier Group Company, a Chinese manufacturer and marketer of home appliances has not been left in such marketing strategies and has established its base in the Indonesian market.
1. A key point in taking a company international is arbitrage or taking advantage of a price difference. Take for instance Samsung in China. They are dominating the market against their rival Apple 3-1. Apple introduced a cheaper international version of the iPhone in response but is losing its high-end market to Samsung. Samsung mobile devices are the first choice among corporate executives. Also, politically, Chinese officials are familiar with Samsung products with a committee following its moves. However, the Chinese media is increasingly critical of Apple. Secondly, even though the Chinese market knows that Samsung is Korean, they have targeted a niche market in the world’s largest economy.
In this article, Kathleen O’Toole depicts the Internet effect people’s lives. She mentions it is good because the Internet make our lives easily and comfortably. However, it
In the text Redefining Global Strategy, Pankaj Ghemawat discusses a method of indentifying the various differences that can exist between two countries, and that must be addressed when considering cross-border operations. This method is called the CAGE Framework. CAGE is an acronym used to describe the cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic distances that can exist between multiple countries. While methods of measuring physical and psychic distance have been already been incorporated over the last three decades, “… the CAGE framework takes a much broader view of distance, and has a much more solid empirical base.” (Ghemawat, 41) By exploring these four dimensions, a company can better plan their strategy when considering international expansion.
Domestic Business: Is the one that acquires all of its resources and sells all of
I believe that with the creation of the internet it has made life much easier, it still amazes me that we are able to do so many things that we were not able to do before this technology. For example, when I was going to school it was nothing to get on the bus or train to go to the library or have to stay after school for study groups because you had that big exam. When computers first came out just learning the DOS system was a big thing on your Apple computer, now we can do everything and more without even going outside.
During the semester I have spent in Business 105, I have not only learned more about my major which is International Business, but I have also, learned about the inner workings of the Bryan School of Business as a whole. Additionally, I have been educated on the different accomplishments and resume builders, which will catapult me ahead in the workforce, making me a unique candidate among my peers. Finally by using the resources provided to me by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro I will gain the knowledge of not only how to become a better student but, one day an employee.
Explain the stages that are typically taken by a firm moving from a domestic business to an international?
Marketing is one of the significant aspects, which is considered by every organisation for global expansion. It is important for the business to manage its marketing structure to promote the products to the new market. Moreover, the concept of marketing is vital as it is based on the targeted market and the type of the product to be promoted. In this regard, it is stated that, one of the marketing agencies has been requested by a global chocolate manufacturer to work with them for the launch of a chocolate bar. The chocolate manufactured by the company is dark in nature and is of good quality with 150gm of weight. The objective of the company is to launch the chocolate in South America for a prosperous venture. The target market for the dark chocolate is the ageing population over the age of 65 years. The aim of the company is to launch the chocolate bar in South America targeting at the over 65’s market (Cant & et. al., 2009).
I use my laptop every day. I always go on either to do homework, or to talk to my friends, but I wish I didn't have to. E-mail is fast and easy, but I believe it's becoming so impersonal. About a month ago I went out and bought stationery. Now I'm sending a lot more personalized letters than e-mail. It's almost unheard of now to get an actual hand written letter from someone. I think that's sad. Handwritten things are valued more now. No one takes the time to handwrite something to someone else, and when they do, it's a shock. I guess I haven't changed much. I like technology and what it can do, but I still wouldn't mind living without it.
In addition to this the internet has affected my life in that it allows me to be bold and create something amazing without anyone’s permission. Back in the pre internet age in order to learn and progress at something you had to either to read an often times outdated book, or find someone to teach you the information. Once you obtained enough knowledge about your craft you had to work under someone in somewhat of an apprenticeship and were essentially not allowed to move up in the industry until they deemed you fit to do so. You had to have someone else’s permission to progress further in your work. Today the internet allows anyone to create something amazing, and the low barrier to entry makes it so that no one has an excuse to not be great. Two college kids created the website Reddit with nothing but a laptop, an internet connection, and some Ramen noodles, and today the site gets over 8 Billion visits a month! Such a duo wouldn’t have even been an afterthought without the power of the
