Integration - It's Time for a Change
Integration is definitely not working, or being used the way it was intended. Sure it's working in the sense that the schools are more diverse then when they were segregated, but integration is no where near where it should be and where it was intended to be. There are a few key points that demonstrate why integration isn't working like it should. The most obvious is the lack of integrations in a lot of schools, and the lack of diversity in our classes. Like we saw in the documentary, the schools are integrated, but the classes are segregated. Integration in some schools has led to tracking, which essentially is institutionalized racism- the opposite of what integration is for.
Although we have programs like METCO, we don't have nearly enough. There isn't enough integration in our schools, and there isn't anything changing that. Programs that did have volunteer integration have been cancelled because of lack of funding, and support by the community and government. Samuel has a great team supporting him which makes inclusion in general classes easier. Dan and Betsy did not want him in a separate class from his peers. Samuel peer’s loves having him in class and he is not left out. This documentary raised the question for me are schools including all students. The documentary talked to students with disabilities, students without disabilities, and educators. The younger kids did not see a difference just perks. The children in Samuel class thinks his accommodations are cool. The older kids in a different school views varied; it seemed harder to include students with disabilities in general classes. Students with disabilities are more secluded in the higher grades. There should be no separate classrooms. I have been going to school with a diverse group of individuals for a long time and I have gotten along with my peers just fine. There was no pulling of the race card and no judging of someone’s religion. I think that the economy has gotten a bit further in having education be more accessible to everybody. Public schools tend to have a majority/ dominant race in particular areas. There are so many schools and so many neighborhoods to choose from that it has become slightly easier to find a school that fits a childs needs. Although, and I cannot stress it enough, it is ultimately up to the adult in the classroom, the teacher, to encourage her students, have them feel welcomed and a part of a whole group. One attempt made to correct this failure was the permanent desegregation of all public schools across the country. In the celebration of the Brown v. Board of Education all public schools were integrated with both races. Before this integration there were all white and all black schools. This was in favor of the idea of “separate but equal”. My research synthesis paper is about school segregation, and I wanted to identify how and why schools continue to be racially and socioeconomically segregated today. I will use these questions, as well as knowledge gained from scholarly articles, as a platform for my analysis of school segregation and its implications for students and communities. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Brown vs. The Board of Education that schools needed to integrate and provide equal education for all people and it was unconstitutional for the state to deny certain citizens this opportunity. Although this decision was a landmark case and meant the schools could no longer deny admission to a child based solely on the color of their skin. By 1957, most schools had began to slowly integrate their students, but those in the deep south were still trying to fight the decision. One of the most widely known instances of this happening was at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. It took the school district three years to work out an integration plan. The board members and faculty didn't like the fact that they were going to have to teach a group of students that were looked down upon and seen as "inferior" to white students. However, after much opposition, a plan was finally proposed. The plan called for the integration to happen in three phases. First, during the 1957-1958 school year, the senior high school would be integrated, then after completion at the senior high level, the junior high would be integrated, and the elementary levels would follow in due time. Seventeen students were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be the first black teenagers to begin the integration process. The town went into an uproar. America has a history of placing laws and policies on non-whites, thus making it extremely hard for them to live a well-balanced life. To come to a clear consensus, it is important to review each side of the argument. There are a great deal of educators, researchers, and psychologists who argue that inclusion is not in the best interest of the child, and should not be practiced in today’s school systems.
