2.8 Innovations
2.8.1 GLARE®®:
The most recent innovation is GLARE®, which has been developed by Fokker and the TU
Delft; GLARE® components are manufactured for the Airbus A380 aircraft, which is the largest passenger aircraft in the world. GLARE® is a laminate of glass fiber layers and layers of thin aluminum plates, bonded together using epoxy. Combining these layers creates a composite which has a lot of advantages compared to using just one of these materials on their own. The strength lies in the combination. Fokker received the Flight
Award in 2002 for their development of GLARE®.
Advantages of GLARE®: 3 [11]
• Weight reduction: 15 to 30%
• Increased resistance to impact
• Lightning strike resistance
• Excellent fire resistance behavior
Without the development of GLARE®, it would have been impossible for the Airbus A380 aircraft to take off.
2.8.2 Thermoplastics:
Fokker also specializes in thermoplastics, which is a polymer that at a certain temperature is flexible and once cooled down it becomes solid. The temperature at which is it flexible is between the transition temperature and the melting temperature. Thermoplastics are used in multiple aircraft, such as the Gulfstream G550/G650, Boeing Apache, Airbus A340-500/600, and A380. [12]
2.8.3 Bonded Aluminum:
For the past 50 years Fokker Aerostructures has been testing and developing metal bonding.
It is a very simple concept, instead of milling or etching away aluminum into the shape needed; Fokker takes thin aluminum sheets and “glues” them on top of each other using speci... ... middle of paper ...

... also involves communicating with employees within Fokker who have practical experience, making or editing CATIA models, brainstorming solutions to problems, and setting up technology demonstrations.
The atmosphere within the Production Engineering department is great in general, people tend to get along easily. However if you have limited Dutch proficiency, it can be more difficult to insert yourself into a conversation between other co-workers.
An intern within Fokker is seen as useful considering they bring in new knowledge, have time to do projects which other workers don’t have time for, and are relatively cheap labor.
Many employees are willing to help out with problems that come up during the internship, which can be extremely helpful.
Being an intern at Fokker Aerostructures will provide knowledge and experience which will be useful in many other companies.
