2.8 Innovations
2.8.1 GLARE®®:
The most recent innovation is GLARE®, which has been developed by Fokker and the TU
Delft; GLARE® components are manufactured for the Airbus A380 aircraft, which is the largest passenger aircraft in the world. GLARE® is a laminate of glass fiber layers and layers of thin aluminum plates, bonded together using epoxy. Combining these layers creates a composite which has a lot of advantages compared to using just one of these materials on their own. The strength lies in the combination. Fokker received the Flight
Award in 2002 for their development of GLARE®.
Advantages of GLARE®: 3 [11]
• Weight reduction: 15 to 30%
• Increased resistance to impact
• Lightning strike resistance
• Excellent fire resistance behavior
Without the development of GLARE®, it would have been impossible for the Airbus A380 aircraft to take off.
2.8.2 Thermoplastics:
Fokker also specializes in thermoplastics, which is a polymer that at a certain temperature is flexible and once cooled down it becomes solid. The temperature at which is it flexible is between the transition temperature and the melting temperature. Thermoplastics are used in multiple aircraft, such as the Gulfstream G550/G650, Boeing Apache, Airbus A340-500/600, and A380. [12]
2.8.3 Bonded Aluminum:
For the past 50 years Fokker Aerostructures has been testing and developing metal bonding.
It is a very simple concept, instead of milling or etching away aluminum into the shape needed; Fokker takes thin aluminum sheets and “glues” them on top of each other using speci... ... middle of paper ...

The atmosphere within the Production Engineering department is great in general, people tend to get along easily. However if you have limited Dutch proficiency, it can be more difficult to insert yourself into a conversation between other co-workers.
An intern within Fokker is seen as useful considering they bring in new knowledge, have time to do projects which other workers don’t have time for, and are relatively cheap labor.
Many employees are willing to help out with problems that come up during the internship, which can be extremely helpful.
Being an intern at Fokker Aerostructures will provide knowledge and experience which will be useful in many other companies.
However, metals can be quite hard to cut or shape into a desirable piece, requiring application of extreme forces. Depending on the project,
Have you ever wondered why the plastic bag that you left on the porch during winter cracks or breaks more easily than when you left it during summer time but a piece of wood which was left just like the plastic bag has no effect whatsoever? This is because of a phenomenon, which only happens to polymers, known as the glass transition. For each polymer, there is a certain temperature at which the amorphous polymers undergo a second order phase transition from a rubbery and viscous amorphous solid to a brittle and glassy amorphous solid called the glass transition temperature, Tg.1 When the polymer, or in this case, the plastic bag, is cooled below their glass transition temperature, it becomes hard and brittle like a glass but when it is used above their glass transition temperatures, it might have a different effect than when used at room temperature or below the glass transition temperature as normally, different types of polymers like clothes, food packaging, insulations for wires, etc. are either used above their glass transition temperatures or
Stiffness In terms of stiffness this additive is hard and stiff. This affects the polymers in a good way because it acts like a protective shield for the polymer to stop any polymer oxidation on the polymer.
This tool has a thin metal sheet or ribbon attached to the handle. The ribbon carves into the material.
Moreover, internships are great starting blocks for a career. Jeff McGuire explains how in today’s educational system, schools have specialized offices and employees whose primary responsibility is to help you...
PVC is classified as a thermoplastic, which can be re-shaped in the presence of heat. Situations where temperatures reach up to 160 degrees Celsius (melting point) would cause deformation to the PVC; this would be considered a
Polymer-Polyethylene is partially crystalline as well as amorphous because it has crystalline and amorphous regions. Also it has linear chains so this is the simplest structure compared to a branched or network chain. This can be of an advantage to it over other types of materials as its good toughness and elongation makes it very significant in the engineering industry as it can be moulded or extruded into shape...

ability to establish a professional work ethos as well as developing skills needed to maintain a work life balance. Through all the experiences gained from this internship, it has provided skills such as multitasking in a fast paced office setting, keen organizational skills, and improvement on communicating in a professional workplace as well as the ability to handle situations as they arise.
...es are a great way to start out a internship in a Business Administration career because they hire people from the community and people that are not required to earn a high payment as a beginning salary and people who want to learn about the business. At some internship interns do not get paid for the hours they worked because to graduate it’s a requirement and you need them to learn and get a better feeling about the job.
You will learn what you can do and the areas you need to work on in your studies. An Internship will help you gain the confidence you need to perfect your abilities. You will also gain valuable work experience. It also will give you some insight on how to solve problems with in your work area. Your internship will help you network by establishing a contact base, and references which can give you future letters of support. Internships provide hands-on learning opportunities, and also can lead to employment. All internships do not guarantee employment, but the experience is worth it. Whether you are compensated or not, the internship can provide you some academic credit to help you farther your education. Emp...

Within the following decade need for air-transport made it very desirable. This is mainly due to World War I as many of the retired bombers were turned into commercial airliners. Soon after these flights commenced it became very apparent that in order to be making any financial again there needed to be more people on these aircraft as they could initially fit four passengers (Century of Flight 2008). British aviation company de Havilland built a ten passenger plane that seated it occupants in comfort called the de Havilland Dragon. 1930’s saw the expansion of the commercial airliner market (Century of Flight 2008). As the need for air-transport grew so did the supply, as for any demand. Ailing such as Lufthansa (Germany), United Airlines (United States), Imperial Airways (Britain) and KLM were just some of the airlines that started operating in this
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
The internship will include orientation on the function and will focus primarily on learning and developing new skills. This will help in the deeper understanding of concept through hands on application of the knowledge learned during the internship.
