Innocence Sabotaged

Civility is a seldom occurrence in American society today. We rarely treat one another with any humility or compassion anymore. Instead, our American soldiers abuse POWs, our Catholic clergy members abuse young boys and our school teachers abuse students. American soldiers have lost their credibility in the world ever since they were accused of abusing prisoners of war. In Afghanistan, as soldiers searched for Bin Laden, suspected terrorists were captured and imprisoned only to be subjected to abuse. Two prisoners died from blunt force injuries at the hands of American soldiers. A total of twenty-six soldiers were charged in the incident. Scandals at Abu Ghraib have also surfaced. Soldiers placed hoods on detainees heads, stripped and beat them. They also put leashes around their necks. The soldiers at Abu Ghraib took pictures as "souvenirs"; which is what ultimately sealed their convictions. Prisoners may not be innocent but they are defenseless, and do not deserve the humiliation and degradation. In the last 40 years, two percent of Catholic priests have been accused of some form of abuse of children. Most recently, a Massachusetts priest plead guilty to repeatedly raping an altar boy. Accusations of the clergy are not limited to priests; nuns have also come into the picture. A dozen nuns were accused of abusing the children they were responsible for caring for at an orphanage. All this has amounted to around 500 cases and millions of dollars paid by the Diocese in settlements. More of the innocent are being abused by their trusted school teachers. A media spectacle was made of thirty-six year old married elementary teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau. She was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old boy, who ultimately fathered two of her children. She gave birth to both in prison. Last month, a twenty-four year old middle school teacher of Florida was charged with having sex with a 14-year-old student in a car as another student drove. This type of behavior is unacceptable in our society.
