Inhumanity is the power to loose all of the traits that make humans who they are. The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding communicates the theme of inhumanity of man through the symbolism of the pig head, the color red, and the fire. The pig head communicates theme by showing the evil within all men. The color red transmits theme by showing how something can go from being alive, innocent, and free to lifeless, broken, and gone. The fire conveys theme by showing how people can have good intentions, but with time the evil will grow just like a flame. The next paragraph speaks of the symbol the pig head. To the boys on the island the fire was a symbol of hope, rescue, and a last chance at keeping their humanity. This quote takes place during the first ‘real’ assembly that all of the boys have together. The boys are discussing what needs to be done and how they are going to leave the island. It is pretty early in the book, so the boys still have their innocence. “Ralph waved the conch. ‘Shut up! Wait! Listen!’ He went on in the silence, borne on his triumph. ‘There is another thing. We can help them find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.’”(Golding, 38). This quote demonstrates the theme, The Inhumanity of Man through word choice and phrasing. An important phrase in the quote is “find us”. This explains how the boys on the island have hope that someone might find them. It also shows that the boys want to get off of the island and they think it is still a possibility. An important word in the quote is “fire”, the word fire is used to explain a signal or a way for the people to know that the boys are on the island. A fire also can describe a burning inside of you, and the boys have a burning inside of them to go back home and have everything go back to normal. The fire is their last connection to civilization and their humanity. The boys agreed on building a fire. They worked as a team and built a fire. After a few hours however, the fire got out of hand. “Smoke was rising here and there among the creepers that festooned the dead or dying trees. In the beginning of the novel, the way that the boys maintain the fire is a sign that they want to be rescued and return to society. When the fire burns low or goes out, the boys have seemed to lose sight of their desire to be rescued and have accepted their savage lives on the island. Rescue is the first and only thing that is going through the minds of the boys. Fire also represents civilty because fire is used for warmth, comfort and tool-making. This tells us that the boys voluntarily became savages, so this represents not only the loss of a civilized society, but also the betrayal of it. When the fire goes out, it also signifies the loss of hope. If the boys believed that they would be rescued, then they would not allow the fire to go out. Again, because of the fire being let out voluntarily it also represents the betrayal of hope. When the fire goes out, the boys no longer want to be a part of civilization or be rescued by it.2. The father often uses the phrase “carrying the fire,” to suggest the knowledge the son must inherit from his father in order to one day continue the father's legacy. The father tries to educate his son in goodness, survival, and decency even though all such humanity has been extinguished. His efforts to preserve civilized manners reflect his nurturing and give purpose to his existence. Before the father dies he tells his son that all this fire—warmth, instinct for good, and knowledge—lives inside him: “You have to carry the fire. I don't know how to. Yes, you do. Is the fire real? The fire? Yes, it is. Where is it? I don't know where it is. Yes, you do. It's inside you. It always was there. I can see it” (McCarthy 278-279). The fire has multiple symbolic meanings for the man and the boy. For the man the fire represents the love he has for his son because his son is his reason for continuing. It is also the man’s moral code, his way to refrain from turning evil and committing murder or cannibalism. For the boy the fire symbolizes the kindness he carries even when he has been exposed to evil. Since the boy was born after the catastrophic event, he embodies a sense of purity, an untainted fire within him. Consequently, the son is more naïve and trusting of others than his father. The fire and the conch started out bright, full of life and gave the boys confidence and a feeling of home. As life falls apart on the island, the fire grows stronger and rich in color and the conch grows weaker and dull. When the conch breaks, society and any faith in order comes to an end. In the end, fire consumes everything and the hope for survival comes to a close. The complex concepts of fire and the conch changed along with the boys’ life on the island and in a way led them to their ultimate downfall.

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies portrays the lives of young British boys whose plane crashed on a deserted island and their struggle for survival. The task of survival was challenging for such young boys, while maintaining the civilized orders and humanity they were so accustomed too. These extremely difficult circumstances and the need for survival turned these innocent boys into the most primitive and savaged mankind could imagine. William Golding illustrates man’s capacity for evil, which is revealed in man’s inherent nature. When the children become stranded on the island, the rules of society no longer apply to them. Without the supervision of their parents or of the law, the primitive nature of the boys surfaces, and their lives begin to fall apart. The downfall starts with their refusal to gather things for survival. The initial reaction of the boys is to swim, run, jump, and play. They do not wish to build shelters, gather food, or keep a signal fire going. Consequently, the boys live without luxury that could have been obtained had they maintained a society on the island. Instead, these young boys take advantage of their freedom and life as they knew it deteriorates.
