Do you remember the first time you danced? Now think about that for a minute, really think. I’m not talking about the first time you slow danced awkwardly with someone at a school dance, I’m talking about really dancing. Maybe you danced when you were accepted to college, or when you got an A on a test in a class you struggle in. Dancing isn’t something you force, it’s something you let overcome you and allow to happen. When you are really enjoying dancing you are allowing the music to flow through you. There is so many different styles and techniques when it comes to professionally dancing. Jazz has been immeasurably impacted by places of social dancing, and ragtime music. It was concocted from a variety of different influences whether it be ethnic, cultural development or historical events. But like everything else that is “American” it stems from elsewhere. The beginnings of music and dance such as Jazz are from around the time of slavery. The original tempos, rhythms and forever evolving were brought amongst slave ships to american byways. The Slave Act of 1740 changed things drastically for the African Americans as they became prohibited of celebrating the cultural identity they greatly cherished. The new law barred the freedom of playing African drum music or performing african dancing. Although the ban, they would not let it diminish their hunger for dancing. Andrew Lloyd Webber was made famous for his prominent work with broadway musicals such and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Phantom of the Opera, Cats and many more, with Gillian Lynne choreographing many of them. Jazz dancing was becoming more and more prevalent from the release of movies such as Fame, Footloose, and Dirty Dancing. The 1980’s thrived from dancing and singing whether it be on stage or in your living room on MTV. MTV was a new introduction and set for dancers and performers. It started broadcasting in 1981, choreographed music videos were highly popular and showed off different types of high energy jazz and break dancing, and sometimes even some ballet. You might know some of the best pop choreographers that are still around to this day like Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Paula Abdul.
