Seventy-five years ago if a person broke their hip, they were bed bound for years if not the rest of their life. Today, what was once a terrible affliction is now a burden of the past. Instead of being incapacitated, a surgical procedure, known as a hip replacement, is performed. The patient is then able to live pain free after 4-8 weeks of recovery and therapy. They are able to engage in activities that would have been too strenuous or cause too much pain. Although there are mistakes that can be made, the benefits of a hip replacement far outweigh the risks. There are two main reasons why a patient would need a hip replacement; a broken hip or if the cartilage becomes worn down. The hip can be broken from a fall or simply if too much stress is put onto it. Osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear” arthritis, is the leading cause of hip replacements. This is not your usual arthritis as it is the result of years of movement and strain, breaking down the cartilage that cushions the hip joint. The hip replacement procedure is simple. A ten inch incision is made across the hip. The surgeon then proceeds to cut through all of the tissue and muscle to visualize the hip. Hip replacements have many magnificent effects, yet the most prominent impact of a hip replacement is to live pain free. Many patients have to live with constant pain, making it unbearable to run, play their favorite games, or even to rise out of bed. After having the surgery, patients radiate happiness after finding out that moving out of bed doesn't cause that persistent throbbing pain anymore.
