Most people don’t know that it takes only one person to make ordinary day become a major holiday. Some people call Thanksgiving a “turkey day” since turkeys are found as decorations everywhere in the stores. Being part of a Christian church in China, I had the opportunity to experience my very first Thanksgiving with my family and church members when I was only five. I would like to bring some facts about the origins of Thanksgiving, the first feast and the celebration of todays’ national Thanksgiving.
Originally, the first ever Thanksgiving announced by George Washington took place on November 26th, 1789. Surprisingly, it didn’t become an annual tradition until the 19th century, when a writer named Sarah Joseph Hale, inspired by the book The Diary of the Pilgrims, had the idea to make Thanksgiving as an annual holiday. It took 30 years for her to convince the presidents to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. Finally, President Abraham Lincoln announced to celebrate Thanksgiving every year on the third Thursday of November.

Today, people celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering together with family members. Sometimes, people are far away, drive, fly, or take the train to get together with their families to share an enormous meal, and to thank God for all the blessings during the year. Some of the most common dishes served during thanksgiving are; roasted turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin and apple pie.
