What type of exercise lets you make music with your feet? Tap dancing, of course. From the classic films of Fred Astaire to contestants on the popular television show So You Think You Can Dance, most people have seen a dancer tapping. You may even have wanted to try it for yourself. In fact, this style of dance can be practiced by anyone at any age, and tap dancing classes have become popular with active seniors.
As we age, it can become more challenging to find suitable ways to exercise. Joining a gym or a sports team might feel intimidating, and jogging through the neighborhood may be too rough on the joints. Dance, on the other hand, is a wonderful option. Whether it’s simple steps like shuffles and toe taps or more complicated combinations, each number is full of choreography to memorize. There are new friends to be made, and it’s almost impossible not to have fun when there are tap shoes on your feet. Valerie says, “Besides the mental and physical challenges, tap dancing makes me feel very happy. I call it my comic relief. There is never a class where we aren’t laughing a great deal of the time.”
Thankfully, it’s becoming easier to find adult tap classes. Some of these classes are specifically geared to the older adult and may range from beginner level to advanced. To locate a tap class in your area, try phoning your local dance schools. If the school doesn’t have an adult class, recommend they offer one. If enough people are interested, they might take you up on your suggestion.
