The Woz got a taste of what Bulldogs are all about. This past Thursday, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak came on campus to speak on his life throughout Apple, as well as his experiences he learned along the way. As a big fan of Apple myself, this was a big day for me. I grew up idolizing Steve Jobs and Wozniak for their creations in the technology industry. Never would I have thought in my life I would be able to see one of those two individuals in person, but Bryant gave me the opportunity to make that thought a reality. In a fireside conversation with President Machtley, Woz was able to share some insight on what it was like to live in his shoes, and where he sees the future heading for the industry. The speech was actually very interesting. Wozniak spoke with passion the entire time – you could hear it in every syllable that came out of his mouth when he discussed his accomplishments. Wozniak talked about his drive in building computers, his side of the success story with Apple, and provided advice to students in making sure to find that passion in their profession. He mentioned a lot, but my favorite part was when he discussed their roles in the company, he basically said “Steve did not know a lot about computers, heck he did not know much about technology at all. He wanted the magazine covers and being able to make the business decisions. For me, I was shy and not into that type of stuff. Instead, I wanted to get to work on whatever I was working on in the lab.” To me, that just goes back to how important it is to find that passion in life. Sir Steve Jobs, the almighty co-founder of Apple started apple dreaming big. The Harvard College dropout carried through with that dream. According to Leander Kahney, author of “Inside Steve’s Brain,” “apple went public 1980 with the biggest public offering since 1958” (2008), this offer proved successful as apple soon became a super power. Apple suffered a fall out though, but Steve Jobs came back and rescued them, reviving them to their previous stature.
The speaker organized the presentation very well and made it easy to follow for the audience. She chose words that got the message across clearly and were not difficult to understand. Since this was targeted at a younger audience, she simplified the concepts and was very specific. The sentences of the speech were structured appropriately, and had no grammatical errors. Jobs had a talent at recognizing other talent. Steve Jobs wasn't a tech person, he didn't know computers, or coding, he knew exactly how to get people to work together and had a vision that no one else had. Obama gave the speech, according to his opening in a shorter, meaning in a few words as possible. Although he did so his speech was clear and easy to comprehend. The conclusion was also memorable. He spoke of Dr. King and showed pictures of important people who influenced us in one way or another. Obama talked about how he sees our future unfolding in workers on the assembly line, students, soldiers, and elderly women making him hopeful about our future. We need to face the future with confidence is basically what Obama was saying and that our future depends on us, the citizens and we need to take advantage of the many opportunities.

On October 5, 2011 Steve Jobs passed away in his home in Palo Alto California; Jobs had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2003. Steve brought so much different technological advancement that most people use everyday without knowing who created them. Everything that Jobs created, he did because he understood what his customers wanted, and where the market was going. Steve Jobs believed in all of his products and innovations he sold to people, and had faith in the people he worked with was what really shaped Apple. After leaving the company and then returning, Steve Jobs’ influence made Apple one of the top computer companies in the world.

I was able to witness some of the techniques he uses to inspire and push people in his speech. He left Apple and actually returned to school to finish his degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences, before returning to Apple shortly after. During this period, he was a main contributor in the development of the Apple Macintosh computer, which became the first successful mouse driven home computer. After his main years with Apple, Wozniak took on other ventures, including starting or acquiring new tech companies, developing new technology, charity work and other philanthropic endeavors. His first significant venture after Apple was a company called CL9. The company brought to the market a product that most people use today. It was the first programmable universal remote control. As much as Wozniak loved creating and developing products, he also had a passion and burning desire to bring his knowledge and love of computers to children. One of his dreams had always been to teach younger children computers and he was able to achieve that by teaching fifth to ninth grade students.
