This year I will be completing my third and last Type III. My topic this year will be on the history of horse racing. I chose this topic since I have always been fascinated with horses and want to learn more on the subject. My goal for this project is to research and understand how horse racing has developed. I became interested in horses around the time I went to a horse riding camp with a friend. However, after recently going to a horse race in Kentucky with my family and my dad’s friend, I have became further captivated in the horse racing aspect. The original origins of horse racing are debated. As stated in “The History of Horse Racing Horse racing’s birthplace has been debated and hasn’t yet had little agreement among historians. Most sources believe it stemmed from the B.C.E. era from the Romans. However, the Romans were the ones who brought the idea to life in England and then eventually the England people brought it to America. Horse racing even took place at the ancient Olympics from 638 BCE. Forms of horse racing have been around a very long time but has evolved into something much bigger. Once you get them to settle down and get there mind focused on just walking and the rider then you know the bond with the rider and horse are strong. When it is time for the second run of the night you want to warm them up again but not as hard this time because he or she has already been warmed up once before this, so just a little warming up won’t hurt. When it is that time for the second run the rider will bring the horse him a set him or her up for their first barrel and make the most of the race. If you see the rider smiling then everyone knows she has done her job with this horse. The rider can make an automatic barrel horse where that horse know his job and she barely has to ask the horse for a turn or touch his face to go around that barrel. When the rider gets a horse to be like that everyone can tell they spent hours and days together. The rider worked with that horse but never made him sour or hate coming into the arena. They spent time working on flexing the horse and making sure he knew when to tuck his nose and leave it for an extra second. They will all see when they are running home how much they spend time they spend together if they are fast and smooth through the pattern and don’t have any blow ups before or after coming in and out of the arena. Even though any breed is allow to participate in barrel racing, the American Quarter horse is the most predominate breed in the sport mainly because it is the most versatile of all breeds and has the speed and agility to bend around the barrels. When it comes to types or bloodlines of the horse it is more of a personal opinion. A competitor can choose a horse that is more for racing in order to provide a faster horse or a cutting horse that is will provide more maneuverability and a smaller bend around the barrels. One good ideal is to pair racing and cutting bloodlines in order to produce a horse with the ideal combination of speed and agility.

Horse racing, with chariots as well as riders, was an early form of competition in the early Olympic games in Greece. As well as the Greeks, the Roman empire enjoyed watching horse races. This sport became widely popular around the rest of Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa as well. In the 18th century, the first open field races were held for the public to see. In the United States, as horse racing became more and more popular, weights the horses could carry were standardized to the age of the horse. This assured that the younger horse with less muscle would not be carrying as much weight as the 5 year olds with a much larger muscle mass. The driver has the legal right to hit the horse for motivation in order to win a position. Network television is broadcasting the acceptance of whipping by showcasing to the viewers how the drivers are permitted to hit the horses. Whipping should be banned in horse racing. In fact, the amendment to rule 1734, involving whipping, was filed with the Secretary of State on October 13, 2016 and will be effective January 1, 2017. According to the California Horse Racing Board, “The Board proposes to amend Rule 1734 to clarify what is acceptable use of a whip by a driver . . . no driver shall use unreasonable force in whipping a horse, nor whip any horse causing welts or breaks in the skin. The proper use of a whip is meant to encourage a horse; the force it takes to cause welts or breaks in the skin is beyond the limit necessary to receive a positive response from the horse and may even produce a negative reaction” (Rules, Regulatiln & Law). This new amendment going into place is confirming the fact that there are issues with whipping. When riding a horse you don’t just sit there and do nothing, You work hard to control a 800-1000 pound animal. You have to push your horse and yourself to the greatest you can be. It is a lot of work, it is just like any other sport. You have to go ride your horse at least 4 times a week, you practice in the wind, rain, snow, when it’s hot out, and event when it is freezing cold.
One of my earliest memories of Grandpa begins with us driving to the Monmouth Park Racetrack. We sure did love to go to the track and root for Julie Krone or one of our other favorite jockeys. He loved challenges, and he especially loved the challenge of picking the ponies. He would read the race programs in the Asbury Park Press and usually pre-pick most of the day's favorite horses before ever leaving the house. Still, on arrival, we always bought the program and maybe a race sheet or two before entering the track grandstand. After picking up a couple of seats right around the finish line or maybe a little past it, back to figuring he'd go. As he went, grandpa would always point out the horses that had won recently or looked like they were due. "I have a feeling about this one" he'd say.

Times have changed though people no longer have to have their horses trained in such a hurry. Very few horses are used very hard today. Not all horses were started in such a rough manner then either. The Spanish vaqueros of the 1800's used the bosal to start their horses, and they took their time in doing so.

Horseback riding is not an activity most people think of, but it is a great escape for some people. Horseback riding is not just saddling up and riding, people have to have a passion for horses and riding. Some things to keep in mind when riding is balance and knowledge on how to keep the horse under control. People can be told how to ride, but each person will have to find a style that works for them. When riding a horse the concept of time, destination and worries do not exist.
